Profane Esau showed his disregard for the covenant blessings by marrying daughters of the land (24:3–4; 31:50 and notes). By intermarrying with the Canaanites, and so vexing his parents (27:46), he effectively sealed himself off from the sacred inheritance (21:21; 25:6).
