The Pentateuch does not record details about the religious life of the Israelites during their slavery in Egypt, but it is safe to infer that they had assimilated the religion of the culture there as they did later in Canaan. The incident with the golden calf (Ex. 32) should be understood against the background of idolatry in Egypt. See 23:3; Josh. 24:14.
