Deut 1:3

1:3 the fortieth year. This date (forty years since the Exodus from Egypt) serves to fix the time for the book as a whole. The years of divine judgment have ended (Num. 14:33, 34), and Israel prepares to enter the Promised Land. This forty-year period included thirty-eight years in the wilderness, followed by two years for the conquest of Transjordan (2:14).
