7:1 locusts. This Hebrew word, occurring only here and in Nah. 3:17, denotes swarming locusts just hatched.

latter growth . . . king’s mowings. This verse seems to indicate that the first crop (the “king’s mowings”) represented the king’s share (cf. 5:11; 1 Kin. 12:4), while the farmer and his family depended on the second harvest for survival. Destruction of this second crop by locusts placed the population at risk of starvation.
