7:12 eat bread there . . . prophesy. Probably this means “earn your living by prophesying there in Judah.” Although it was appropriate for a prophet to be paid for his work (1 Sam. 9:6–8; but cf. Mic. 3:5, 11), Amaziah accuses Amos of being merely a prophet for hire. Amaziah’s commands here are an example of the sin of commanding the prophets not to prophesy (2:12).
