16:1 A disciple . . . Timothy. In the small Jewish community of Lystra Paul found this young man, part Jew and part Greek. Like his father, Timothy had been reared as a Greek, and so had not been circumcised. His mother was Jewish. Paul did not think he was compromising the principles of Gentile freedom by circumcising Timothy (v. 3).
