8:18 Benaiah. A man of outstanding military credentials (23:20–22), Benaiah demonstrated his intense loyalty to David and Solomon (1 Kin. 1:8, 36, 37), and, after carrying out Solomon’s order to execute Joab, became commander-in-chief of Solomon’s army (1 Kin. 2:34, 35; 4:4).

priests. This was an officer for which they were not clearly eligible. The parallel at 1 Chr. 18:17 reads “chief officials in the service of the king.” David and Solomon at least supervised sacrifices (6:17, 18; 1 Chr. 21:28; 2 Chr. 5:6).
