David’s decision only to utter a curse upon Joab’s house rather than take direct disciplinary action may have been a result of the ambiguous circumstances of Joab’s crime. More likely, however, such factors as Joab’s considerable power and reputation and his familial relationship with David influenced his decision. Ultimately Joab’s crime did not go unpunished (1 Kin. 2:5, 6, 28–35).
