20:5 I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. God compassionately adds fifteen years (v. 6) to Hezekiah’s life. Hezekiah’s reforms (18:4, 5), together with his abiding trust in God during the Assyrian invasion (18:7, 22, 32; 19:4), reveal a consistency of character. In this respect Hezekiah’s conduct is exemplary. Not only does this passage underscore the importance of prayer, but also divine freedom, compassion, and omnipotence (cf. 1 Kin. 21:27–29).
