to Babylon. It is possible that Manasseh was involved in the rebellion (652–648 b.c.) of Shamash-Shum-Ukin of Babylon against the Assyrian king, Ashurbanipal. Manasseh’s captivity in Babylon and his return to the Promised Land might remind the readers of their own deportation to Babylon and their recent restoration.
