13:1 The preservation of this verse in the manuscript tradition has some defect, since as it stands the Hebrew says that Saul was one year old when he began to rule. But Saul was already a soldier. Saul probably reigned about twenty years, and the number “forty” in Acts 13:21 would be a round figure meaning “a long time.” See the chronology in Introduction: Date and Occasion.
