do not fear. In dealing with unbelieving husbands (v. 1 note), the Christian wives were to maintain their commitment to Christ while at the same time showing proper deference to their husbands. The difficulties involved could lead to displeasure and intimidation on the husband’s part and thus to “fear” on the wife’s part.
