Psalm 6[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to sheminith.[b] A psalm of David.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger(A)

Have mercy on me,(B) Lord, for I am faint;(C)
    heal me,(D) Lord, for my bones are in agony.(E)
My soul is in deep anguish.(F)
    How long,(G) Lord, how long?

Turn,(H) Lord, and deliver me;
    save me because of your unfailing love.(I)
Among the dead no one proclaims your name.
    Who praises you from the grave?(J)

I am worn out(K) from my groaning.(L)

All night long I flood my bed with weeping(M)
    and drench my couch with tears.(N)
My eyes grow weak(O) with sorrow;
    they fail because of all my foes.

Away from me,(P) all you who do evil,(Q)
    for the Lord has heard my weeping.
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;(R)
    the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish;(S)
    they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame.(T)

Psalm 8-10

Psalm 8[a]

For the director of music. According to gittith.[b] A psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name(A) in all the earth!

You have set your glory(B)
    in the heavens.(C)
Through the praise of children and infants
    you have established a stronghold(D) against your enemies,
    to silence the foe(E) and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,(F)
    the work of your fingers,(G)
the moon and the stars,(H)
    which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    human beings that you care for them?[c](I)

You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels[e](J)
    and crowned them[f] with glory and honor.(K)
You made them rulers(L) over the works of your hands;(M)
    you put everything under their[g] feet:(N)
all flocks and herds,(O)
    and the animals of the wild,(P)
the birds in the sky,
    and the fish in the sea,(Q)
    all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!(R)

Psalm 9[h][i]

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Death of the Son.” A psalm of David.

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;(S)
    I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.(T)
I will be glad and rejoice(U) in you;
    I will sing the praises(V) of your name,(W) O Most High.

My enemies turn back;
    they stumble and perish before you.
For you have upheld my right(X) and my cause,(Y)
    sitting enthroned(Z) as the righteous judge.(AA)
You have rebuked the nations(AB) and destroyed the wicked;
    you have blotted out their name(AC) for ever and ever.
Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies,
    you have uprooted their cities;(AD)
    even the memory of them(AE) has perished.

The Lord reigns forever;(AF)
    he has established his throne(AG) for judgment.
He rules the world in righteousness(AH)
    and judges the peoples with equity.(AI)
The Lord is a refuge(AJ) for the oppressed,(AK)
    a stronghold in times of trouble.(AL)
10 Those who know your name(AM) trust in you,
    for you, Lord, have never forsaken(AN) those who seek you.(AO)

11 Sing the praises(AP) of the Lord, enthroned in Zion;(AQ)
    proclaim among the nations(AR) what he has done.(AS)
12 For he who avenges blood(AT) remembers;
    he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.(AU)

13 Lord, see how my enemies(AV) persecute me!
    Have mercy(AW) and lift me up from the gates of death,(AX)
14 that I may declare your praises(AY)
    in the gates of Daughter Zion,(AZ)
    and there rejoice in your salvation.(BA)

15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;(BB)
    their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.(BC)
16 The Lord is known by his acts of justice;
    the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.[j](BD)
17 The wicked go down to the realm of the dead,(BE)
    all the nations that forget God.(BF)
18 But God will never forget the needy;
    the hope(BG) of the afflicted(BH) will never perish.

19 Arise,(BI) Lord, do not let mortals triumph;(BJ)
    let the nations be judged(BK) in your presence.
20 Strike them with terror,(BL) Lord;
    let the nations know they are only mortal.(BM)

Psalm 10[k]

Why, Lord, do you stand far off?(BN)
    Why do you hide yourself(BO) in times of trouble?

In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,(BP)
    who are caught in the schemes he devises.
He boasts(BQ) about the cravings of his heart;
    he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.(BR)
In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
    in all his thoughts there is no room for God.(BS)
His ways are always prosperous;
    your laws are rejected by[l] him;
    he sneers at all his enemies.
He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.”
    He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”(BT)

His mouth is full(BU) of lies and threats;(BV)
    trouble and evil are under his tongue.(BW)
He lies in wait(BX) near the villages;
    from ambush he murders the innocent.(BY)
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
    like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;(BZ)
    he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.(CA)
10 His victims are crushed,(CB) they collapse;
    they fall under his strength.
11 He says to himself, “God will never notice;(CC)
    he covers his face and never sees.”(CD)

12 Arise,(CE) Lord! Lift up your hand,(CF) O God.
    Do not forget the helpless.(CG)
13 Why does the wicked man revile God?(CH)
    Why does he say to himself,
    “He won’t call me to account”?(CI)
14 But you, God, see the trouble(CJ) of the afflicted;
    you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;(CK)
    you are the helper(CL) of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked man;(CM)
    call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
    that would not otherwise be found out.

16 The Lord is King for ever and ever;(CN)
    the nations(CO) will perish from his land.
17 You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;(CP)
    you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,(CQ)
18 defending the fatherless(CR) and the oppressed,(CS)
    so that mere earthly mortals
    will never again strike terror.

Psalm 14

Psalm 14(A)

For the director of music. Of David.

The fool[a] says in his heart,
    “There is no God.”(B)
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

The Lord looks down from heaven(C)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,(D)
    any who seek God.(E)
All have turned away,(F) all have become corrupt;(G)
    there is no one who does good,(H)
    not even one.(I)

Do all these evildoers know nothing?(J)

They devour my people(K) as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.(L)
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.(M)

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!(N)
    When the Lord restores(O) his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Psalm 16

Psalm 16

A miktam[a] of David.

Keep me safe,(A) my God,
    for in you I take refuge.(B)

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;(C)
    apart from you I have no good thing.”(D)
I say of the holy people(E) who are in the land,(F)
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
Those who run after other gods(G) will suffer(H) more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names(I) on my lips.

Lord, you alone are my portion(J) and my cup;(K)
    you make my lot(L) secure.
The boundary lines(M) have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.(N)
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;(O)
    even at night(P) my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand,(Q) I will not be shaken.(R)

Therefore my heart is glad(S) and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,(T)
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,(U)
    nor will you let your faithful[b] one(V) see decay.(W)
11 You make known to me the path of life;(X)
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,(Y)
    with eternal pleasures(Z) at your right hand.(AA)

Psalm 19

Psalm 19[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The heavens(A) declare(B) the glory of God;(C)
    the skies(D) proclaim the work of his hands.(E)
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.(F)
They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.(G)
In the heavens God has pitched a tent(H) for the sun.(I)
    It is like a bridegroom(J) coming out of his chamber,(K)
    like a champion(L) rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens(M)
    and makes its circuit to the other;(N)
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the Lord(O) is perfect,(P)
    refreshing the soul.(Q)
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,(R)
    making wise the simple.(S)
The precepts of the Lord are right,(T)
    giving joy(U) to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.(V)
The fear of the Lord(W) is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.(X)

10 They are more precious than gold,(Y)
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,(Z)
    than honey from the honeycomb.(AA)
11 By them your servant is warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
    Forgive my hidden faults.(AB)
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;(AC)
    may they not rule over me.(AD)
Then I will be blameless,(AE)
    innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
    be pleasing(AF) in your sight,
    Lord, my Rock(AG) and my Redeemer.(AH)

Psalm 21

Psalm 21[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The king rejoices in your strength, Lord.(A)
    How great is his joy in the victories you give!(B)

You have granted him his heart’s desire(C)
    and have not withheld the request of his lips.[b]
You came to greet him with rich blessings
    and placed a crown of pure gold(D) on his head.(E)
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
    length of days, for ever and ever.(F)
Through the victories(G) you gave, his glory is great;
    you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.(H)
Surely you have granted him unending blessings
    and made him glad with the joy(I) of your presence.(J)
For the king trusts in the Lord;(K)
    through the unfailing love(L) of the Most High(M)
    he will not be shaken.(N)

Your hand will lay hold(O) on all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize your foes.
When you appear for battle,
    you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and his fire will consume them.(P)
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.(Q)
11 Though they plot evil(R) against you
    and devise wicked schemes,(S) they cannot succeed.
12 You will make them turn their backs(T)
    when you aim at them with drawn bow.

13 Be exalted(U) in your strength, Lord;(V)
    we will sing and praise your might.
