II. A Sincere Faith (1:3–18)

To maintain the heritage of sincere faith requires diligent action without fear (vv. 5-7). Timothy is then prepared to suffer for the Gospel even as Paul has (vv. 8-12). This section is further unified by the use of the phrase Do not be ashamed (v. 8, cf. vv. 12, 16). Confidence in God's Spirit enables us to overcome fear and embarrassment.
