III. The Occasion For The Letter (V. 4)

The writer has encountered some of the children of the “elect lady,” probably members of the church who were in the vicinity where he lived. He writes to express his joy that they are walking in the truth according to the commandment (this terminology is characteristic of the Johannine literature). But he also takes this opportunity to warn the church against false teachers.
