Ernest Renan described the gospel of Matthew as “the most important book in the world.” And as far as the church is concerned, Renan's description is accurate. No other book in the NT has exerted more influence upon the life and thought of the church throughout its history than has this gospel.
We turn our attention now to an examination of the origins, structure, and theology of this important book.
