Genesis 5-7

Adam's Descendants to Noah

This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, (A)he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man[a] when they were created. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and (B)named him Seth. (C)The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, (D)and he died.

When Seth had lived 105 years, (E)he fathered Enosh. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered (F)Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch (G)walked with God[b] after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch (H)walked with God, and he was not,[c] (I)for God took him.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground (J)that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief[d] from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered (K)Shem, Ham, and (L)Japheth.

Increasing Corruption on Earth

When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, (M)“My Spirit shall not abide in[e] man forever, (N)for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim[f] were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

(O)The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every (P)intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And (Q)the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it (R)grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah (S)found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah and the Flood

These are the generations of Noah. (T)Noah was a righteous man, (U)blameless in his generation. Noah (V)walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God (W)saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, (X)for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, (Y)“I have determined to make an end of all flesh,[g] for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.[h] Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits,[i] its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof[j] for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 (Z)For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But (AA)I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.” 22 (AB)Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

Then the Lord said to Noah, (AC)“Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that (AD)you are righteous before me in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of all (AE)clean animals,[k] the male and his mate, and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate, and seven pairs[l] of the birds of the heavens also, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth. For in seven days (AF)I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, (AG)and every living thing[m] that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.” (AH)And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him.

Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth. And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him went into the ark to escape the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, and of animals that are not clean, and of birds, and of everything that creeps on the ground, two and two, male and female, went into the ark with Noah, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And after seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the (AI)fountains of the great deep burst forth, and (AJ)the windows of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark, 14 they and every beast, according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, according to its kind, and every bird, according to its kind, every winged creature. 15 They (AK)went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16 And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in (AL)as God had commanded him. And the Lord shut him in.

17 The flood (AM)continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits[n] deep. 21 And (AN)all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind. 22 Everything on the dry land (AO)in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. 23 He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only (AP)Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark. 24 And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.

Matthew 3:7-4:11

But when he saw many of (A)the Pharisees and (B)Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, (C)“You brood of (D)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (E)the wrath to come? Bear fruit (F)in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, (G)‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from (H)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (I)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 (J)“I baptize you with water (K)for repentance, but (L)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you (M)with the Holy Spirit and (N)fire. 12 His (O)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and (P)gather his wheat into the barn, (Q)but the chaff he will burn with (R)unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 (S)Then Jesus came (T)from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 (U)John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, (V)the heavens were opened to him,[a] and he (W)saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, (X)a voice from heaven said, (Y)“This is my beloved Son,[b] with whom I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

(Z)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (AA)to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting (AB)forty days and forty nights, he (AC)was hungry. And (AD)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are (AE)the Son of God, command (AF)these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, (AG)“It is written,

(AH)“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
    but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

(AI)Then the devil took him to (AJ)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

(AK)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again (AL)it is written, (AM)‘You shall not (AN)put the Lord your God to the test.’” (AO)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, (AP)Satan! For (AQ)it is written,

(AR)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
    and (AS)him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, (AT)angels came and were ministering to him.

Psalm 3

Save Me, O My God

A Psalm of David, (A)when he fled from Absalom his son.

O Lord, (B)how many are my foes!
    Many are (C)rising against me;
many are saying of my soul,
    (D)“There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah[a]

But you, O Lord, are (E)a shield (F)about me,
    my glory, and (G)the lifter of my head.
I (H)cried aloud to the Lord,
    and he (I)answered me from his (J)holy hill. Selah

I (K)lay down and slept;
    I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
I (L)will not be afraid of many thousands of people
    who have (M)set themselves against me all around.

(N)Arise, O Lord!
    Save me, O my God!
For you (O)strike all my enemies on the cheek;
    you (P)break the teeth of the wicked.

(Q)Salvation belongs to the Lord;
    your blessing be on your people! Selah

Proverbs 1:10-19

10 My son, if sinners (A)entice you,
    do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us, (B)let us lie in wait for blood;
    (C)let us ambush the innocent without reason;
12 like Sheol let us (D)swallow them alive,
    and whole, like (E)those who go down to the pit;
13 we shall find all precious goods,
    we shall fill our houses with plunder;
14 throw in your lot among us;
    we will all have one purse”—
15 my son, (F)do not walk in the way with them;
    (G)hold back your foot from their paths,
16 for (H)their feet run to evil,
    and they make haste to shed blood.
17 (I)For in vain is a net spread
    in the sight of any bird,
18 but these men (J)lie in wait for their own blood;
    they (K)set an ambush for their own lives.
19 (L)Such are the ways of everyone who is (M)greedy for unjust gain;
    (N)it takes away the life of its possessors.
