  1. It was also called Mizpah, because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.

  12. (The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, “Tell us how this awful thing happened.”
  13. Wives for the Benjamites

    The men of Israel had taken an oath at Mizpah: “Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite.”
  14. Then the Israelites asked, “Who from all the tribes of Israel has failed to assemble before the Lord?” For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah was to be put to death.
  15. Then they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah?” They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
  16. The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim a long time—twenty years in all.

    Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah

    Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.
  17. Then Samuel said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah, and I will intercede with the Lord for you.”
  18. When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader of Israel at Mizpah.
  19. When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines.
  20. The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
  21. Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
  22. From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places.
  23. Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah
  24. David at Adullam and Mizpah

    David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there.
