Beloved

 ³ I am my lover's and my lover is mine;
       he browses among the lilies.

 ⁵ Turn your eyes from me;
       they overwhelm me.
       Your hair is like a flock of goats
       descending from Gilead.

 ⁶ Your teeth are like a flock of sheep
       coming up from the washing.
       Each has its twin,
       not one of them is alone.

 ⁷ Your temples behind your veil
       are like the halves of a pomegranate.

 ⁸ Sixty queens there may be,
       and eighty concubines,
       and virgins beyond number;

 ⁹ but my dove, my perfect one, is unique,
       the only daughter of her mother,
       the favorite of the one who bore her.
       The maidens saw her and called her blessed;
       the queens and concubines praised her.

 ¹ How beautiful your sandaled feet,
       O prince's daughter!
       Your graceful legs are like jewels,
       the work of a craftsman's hands.

 ² Your navel is a rounded goblet
       that never lacks blended wine.
       Your waist is a mound of wheat
       encircled by lilies.

 ³ Your breasts are like two fawns,
       twins of a gazelle.

 ⁴ Your neck is like an ivory tower.
       Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon
       by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
       Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
       looking toward Damascus.

 ⁵ Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.
       Your hair is like royal tapestry;
       the king is held captive by its tresses.

 ⁶ How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
       O love, with your delights!

 ⁷ Your stature is like that of the palm,
       and your breasts like clusters of fruit.

 ⁸ I said, "I will climb the palm tree;
       I will take hold of its fruit."
       May your breasts be like the clusters of the vine,
       the fragrance of your breath like apples,

 ⁹ and your mouth like the best wine.

 ¹⁰ I belong to my lover,
       and his desire is for me.

 ¹¹ Come, my lover, let us go to the countryside,
       let us spend the night in the villages. ^[c]

 ¹² Let us go early to the vineyards
       to see if the vines have budded,
       if their blossoms have opened,
       and if the pomegranates are in bloom—
       there I will give you my love.

 ¹³ The mandrakes send out their fragrance,
       and at our door is every delicacy,
       both new and old,
       that I have stored up for you, my lover.

Song of Solomon 8

 ¹ If only you were to me like a brother,
       who was nursed at my mother's breasts!
       Then, if I found you outside,
       I would kiss you,
       and no one would despise me.

 ² I would lead you
       and bring you to my mother's house—
       she who has taught me.
       I would give you spiced wine to drink,
       the nectar of my pomegranates.

 ³ His left arm is under my head
       and his right arm embraces me.

 ⁴ Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you:
       Do not arouse or awaken love
       until it so desires.

 ⁶ Place me like a seal over your heart,
       like a seal on your arm;
       for love is as strong as death,
       its jealousy ^[d] unyielding as the grave. ^[e]
       It burns like blazing fire,
       like a mighty flame. ^[f]

 ⁷ Many waters cannot quench love;
       rivers cannot wash it away.
       If one were to give
       all the wealth of his house for love,
       it ^[g] would be utterly scorned.

 ⁹ If she is a wall,
       we will build towers of silver on her.
       If she is a door,
       we will enclose her with panels of cedar.

Beloved

 ¹¹ Solomon had a vineyard in Baal Hamon;
       he let out his vineyard to tenants.
       Each was to bring for its fruit
       a thousand shekels ^[h] of silver.

 ¹² But my own vineyard is mine to give;
       the thousand shekels are for you, O Solomon,
       and two hundred ^[i] are for those who tend its fruit.

Galatians 4

 ¹What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. ²He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. ³So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. ⁴But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, ⁵to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. ⁶Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba,^[a] Father." ⁷So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

Paul's Concern for the Galatians

 ¹²I plead with you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong. ¹³As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. ¹⁴Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself. ¹⁵What has happened to all your joy? I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. ¹⁶Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?

 ¹⁷Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them. ¹⁸It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. ¹⁹My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you, ²⁰how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you!

Hagar and Sarah

 ²⁴These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. ²⁵Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. ²⁶But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. ²⁷For it is written:
   "Be glad, O barren woman,
      who bears no children;
   break forth and cry aloud,
      you who have no labor pains;
   because more are the children of the desolate woman
      than of her who has a husband."^[b]

 ²⁸Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. ²⁹At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now. ³⁰But what does the Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son."^{[c] 31}Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
