Psalm 63

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

 ² I have seen you in the sanctuary
       and beheld your power and your glory.

 ³ Because your love is better than life,
       my lips will glorify you.

 ⁴ I will praise you as long as I live,
       and in your name I will lift up my hands.

 ⁵ My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
       with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

 ⁶ On my bed I remember you;
       I think of you through the watches of the night.

 ⁷ Because you are my help,
       I sing in the shadow of your wings.

 ⁸ My soul clings to you;
       your right hand upholds me.

 ⁹ They who seek my life will be destroyed;
       they will go down to the depths of the earth.

 ¹⁰ They will be given over to the sword
       and become food for jackals.

 ¹¹ But the king will rejoice in God;
       all who swear by God's name will praise him,
       while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

Psalm 64

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

 ² Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked,
       from that noisy crowd of evildoers.

 ³ They sharpen their tongues like swords
       and aim their words like deadly arrows.

 ⁴ They shoot from ambush at the innocent man;
       they shoot at him suddenly, without fear.

 ⁵ They encourage each other in evil plans,
       they talk about hiding their snares;
       they say, "Who will see them ^[a] ?"

 ⁶ They plot injustice and say,
       "We have devised a perfect plan!"
       Surely the mind and heart of man are cunning.

 ⁷ But God will shoot them with arrows;
       suddenly they will be struck down.

 ⁸ He will turn their own tongues against them
       and bring them to ruin;
       all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.

 ⁹ All mankind will fear;
       they will proclaim the works of God
       and ponder what he has done.

 ¹⁰ Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD
       and take refuge in him;
       let all the upright in heart praise him!

Psalm 65

For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.

 ² O you who hear prayer,
       to you all men will come.

 ³ When we were overwhelmed by sins,
       you forgave ^[c] our transgressions.

 ⁴ Blessed are those you choose
       and bring near to live in your courts!
       We are filled with the good things of your house,
       of your holy temple.

 ⁵ You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness,
       O God our Savior,
       the hope of all the ends of the earth
       and of the farthest seas,

 ⁶ who formed the mountains by your power,
       having armed yourself with strength,

 ⁷ who stilled the roaring of the seas,
       the roaring of their waves,
       and the turmoil of the nations.

 ⁸ Those living far away fear your wonders;
       where morning dawns and evening fades
       you call forth songs of joy.

 ⁹ You care for the land and water it;
       you enrich it abundantly.
       The streams of God are filled with water
       to provide the people with grain,
       for so you have ordained it. ^[d]

 ¹⁰ You drench its furrows
       and level its ridges;
       you soften it with showers
       and bless its crops.

 ¹¹ You crown the year with your bounty,
       and your carts overflow with abundance.

 ¹² The grasslands of the desert overflow;
       the hills are clothed with gladness.

 ¹³ The meadows are covered with flocks
       and the valleys are mantled with grain;
       they shout for joy and sing.

Romans 6

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

 ⁵If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. ⁶For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with,^[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin— ⁷because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

 ⁸Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. ⁹For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. ¹⁰The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

 ¹¹In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. ¹²Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. ¹³Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. ¹⁴For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Slaves to Righteousness

 ¹⁹I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. ²⁰When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. ²¹What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! ²²But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. ²³For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in^[b] Christ Jesus our Lord.
