Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

 ² He makes me lie down in green pastures,
       he leads me beside quiet waters,

 ³ he restores my soul.
       He guides me in paths of righteousness
       for his name's sake.

 ⁴ Even though I walk
       through the valley of the shadow of death, ^[a]
       I will fear no evil,
       for you are with me;
       your rod and your staff,
       they comfort me.

 ⁵ You prepare a table before me
       in the presence of my enemies.
       You anoint my head with oil;
       my cup overflows.

 ⁶ Surely goodness and love will follow me
       all the days of my life,
       and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
       forever.

Psalm 24

Of David. A psalm.

 ² for he founded it upon the seas
       and established it upon the waters.

 ³ Who may ascend the hill of the LORD ?
       Who may stand in his holy place?

 ⁴ He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
       who does not lift up his soul to an idol
       or swear by what is false. ^[b]

 ⁵ He will receive blessing from the LORD
       and vindication from God his Savior.

 ⁶ Such is the generation of those who seek him,
       who seek your face, O God of Jacob. ^[c]

 ⁷ Lift up your heads, O you gates;
       be lifted up, you ancient doors,
       that the King of glory may come in.

 ⁸ Who is this King of glory?
       The LORD strong and mighty,
       the LORD mighty in battle.

 ⁹ Lift up your heads, O you gates;
       lift them up, you ancient doors,
       that the King of glory may come in.

 ¹⁰ Who is he, this King of glory?
       The LORD Almighty—

Psalm 25

Of David.

 ² in you I trust, O my God.
       Do not let me be put to shame,
       nor let my enemies triumph over me.

 ³ No one whose hope is in you
       will ever be put to shame,
       but they will be put to shame
       who are treacherous without excuse.

 ⁴ Show me your ways, O LORD,
       teach me your paths;

 ⁵ guide me in your truth and teach me,
       for you are God my Savior,
       and my hope is in you all day long.

 ⁶ Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love,
       for they are from of old.

 ⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth
       and my rebellious ways;
       according to your love remember me,
       for you are good, O LORD.

 ⁸ Good and upright is the LORD;
       therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.

 ⁹ He guides the humble in what is right
       and teaches them his way.

 ¹⁰ All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful
       for those who keep the demands of his covenant.

 ¹¹ For the sake of your name, O LORD,
       forgive my iniquity, though it is great.

 ¹² Who, then, is the man that fears the LORD ?
       He will instruct him in the way chosen for him.

 ¹³ He will spend his days in prosperity,
       and his descendants will inherit the land.

 ¹⁴ The LORD confides in those who fear him;
       he makes his covenant known to them.

 ¹⁵ My eyes are ever on the LORD,
       for only he will release my feet from the snare.

 ¹⁶ Turn to me and be gracious to me,
       for I am lonely and afflicted.

 ¹⁷ The troubles of my heart have multiplied;
       free me from my anguish.

 ¹⁸ Look upon my affliction and my distress
       and take away all my sins.

 ¹⁹ See how my enemies have increased
       and how fiercely they hate me!

 ²⁰ Guard my life and rescue me;
       let me not be put to shame,
       for I take refuge in you.

 ²¹ May integrity and uprightness protect me,
       because my hope is in you.

 ²² Redeem Israel, O God,
       from all their troubles!

¹⁸The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James, and all the elders were present. ¹⁹Paul greeted them and reported in detail what God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.

 ²⁰When they heard this, they praised God. Then they said to Paul: "You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law. ²¹They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. ²²What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, ²³so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. ²⁴Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everybody will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. ²⁵As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality."

 ²⁶The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them.

Paul Arrested

 ³⁰The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul, they dragged him from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. ³¹While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar. ³²He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

 ³³The commander came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done. ³⁴Some in the crowd shouted one thing and some another, and since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. ³⁵When Paul reached the steps, the violence of the mob was so great he had to be carried by the soldiers. ³⁶The crowd that followed kept shouting, "Away with him!"

Paul Speaks to the Crowd

   "Do you speak Greek?" he replied. ³⁸"Aren't you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the desert some time ago?"

 ³⁹Paul answered, "I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people."

 ⁴⁰Having received the commander's permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic^[a]:
