Psalm 143

A psalm of David.

 ² Do not bring your servant into judgment,
       for no one living is righteous before you.

 ³ The enemy pursues me,
       he crushes me to the ground;
       he makes me dwell in darkness
       like those long dead.

 ⁴ So my spirit grows faint within me;
       my heart within me is dismayed.

 ⁵ I remember the days of long ago;
       I meditate on all your works
       and consider what your hands have done.

 ⁶ I spread out my hands to you;
       my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
       Selah

 ⁷ Answer me quickly, O LORD;
       my spirit fails.
       Do not hide your face from me
       or I will be like those who go down to the pit.

 ⁸ Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
       for I have put my trust in you.
       Show me the way I should go,
       for to you I lift up my soul.

 ⁹ Rescue me from my enemies, O LORD,
       for I hide myself in you.

 ¹⁰ Teach me to do your will,
       for you are my God;
       may your good Spirit
       lead me on level ground.

 ¹¹ For your name's sake, O LORD, preserve my life;
       in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.

 ¹² In your unfailing love, silence my enemies;
       destroy all my foes,
       for I am your servant.

Psalm 144

Of David.

 ² He is my loving God and my fortress,
       my stronghold and my deliverer,
       my shield, in whom I take refuge,
       who subdues peoples ^[a] under me.

 ³ O LORD, what is man that you care for him,
       the son of man that you think of him?

 ⁴ Man is like a breath;
       his days are like a fleeting shadow.

 ⁵ Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down;
       touch the mountains, so that they smoke.

 ⁶ Send forth lightning and scatter {the enemies};
       shoot your arrows and rout them.

 ⁷ Reach down your hand from on high;
       deliver me and rescue me
       from the mighty waters,
       from the hands of foreigners

 ⁸ whose mouths are full of lies,
       whose right hands are deceitful.

 ⁹ I will sing a new song to you, O God;
       on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,

 ¹⁰ to the One who gives victory to kings,
       who delivers his servant David from the deadly sword.

 ¹¹ Deliver me and rescue me
       from the hands of foreigners
       whose mouths are full of lies,
       whose right hands are deceitful.

 ¹² Then our sons in their youth
       will be like well-nurtured plants,
       and our daughters will be like pillars
       carved to adorn a palace.

 ¹³ Our barns will be filled
       with every kind of provision.
       Our sheep will increase by thousands,
       by tens of thousands in our fields;

 ¹⁴ our oxen will draw heavy loads. ^[b]
       There will be no breaching of walls,
       no going into captivity,
       no cry of distress in our streets.

 ¹⁵ Blessed are the people of whom this is true;
       blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.

Psalm 145

A psalm of praise. Of David.

 ² Every day I will praise you
       and extol your name for ever and ever.

 ³ Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
       his greatness no one can fathom.

 ⁴ One generation will commend your works to another;
       they will tell of your mighty acts.

 ⁵ They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty,
       and I will meditate on your wonderful works. ^[d]

 ⁶ They will tell of the power of your awesome works,
       and I will proclaim your great deeds.

 ⁷ They will celebrate your abundant goodness
       and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

 ⁸ The LORD is gracious and compassionate,
       slow to anger and rich in love.

 ⁹ The LORD is good to all;
       he has compassion on all he has made.

 ¹⁰ All you have made will praise you, O LORD;
       your saints will extol you.

 ¹¹ They will tell of the glory of your kingdom
       and speak of your might,

 ¹² so that all men may know of your mighty acts
       and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

 ¹³ Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
       and your dominion endures through all generations.
       The LORD is faithful to all his promises
       and loving toward all he has made. ^[e]

 ¹⁴ The LORD upholds all those who fall
       and lifts up all who are bowed down.

 ¹⁵ The eyes of all look to you,
       and you give them their food at the proper time.

 ¹⁶ You open your hand
       and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

 ¹⁷ The LORD is righteous in all his ways
       and loving toward all he has made.

 ¹⁸ The LORD is near to all who call on him,
       to all who call on him in truth.

 ¹⁹ He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
       he hears their cry and saves them.

 ²⁰ The LORD watches over all who love him,
       but all the wicked he will destroy.

 ²¹ My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD.
       Let every creature praise his holy name
       for ever and ever.

Listen to this passage

²¹In the Law it is written:
   "Through men of strange tongues
      and through the lips of foreigners
   I will speak to this people,
      but even then they will not listen to me,"^[a] says the Lord.

 ²²Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. ²³So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand^[b] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? ²⁴But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand^[c]comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, ²⁵and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"

Orderly Worship

 ²⁹Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. ³⁰And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. ³¹For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. ³²The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. ³³For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.
      As in all the congregations of the saints, ³⁴women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. ³⁵If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

 ³⁶Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? ³⁷If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. ³⁸If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.^[d]

 ³⁹Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. ⁴⁰But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
