Genesis 39

Joseph's Success in Egypt
 1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the (A)Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.

 2(B)The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

 3Now his master (C)saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD (D)caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.

 4So Joseph (E)found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and (F)all that he owned he put in his charge.

 5It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD (G)blessed the Egyptian's house on account of Joseph; thus (H)the LORD'S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.

 6So he left everything he owned in Joseph's charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. Now Joseph was (I)handsome in form and appearance.

 7It came about after these events (J)that his master's wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, "(K)Lie with me."

 8But (L)he refused and said to his master's wife, "Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.

 9"(M)There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife How then could I do this great evil and (N)sin against God?"

 10As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.

 11Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside.

 12She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.

 13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,

 14she called to the men of her household and said to them, "See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed.

 15"When he heard that I raised my voice and [a]screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside."

 16So she left his garment beside her until his master came home.

 17Then she (O)spoke to him with these words, "The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me;

 18and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside."

Joseph Imprisoned
 19Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "This is what your slave did to me," (P)his anger burned.

 20So Joseph's master took him and (Q)put him into the jail, the place where the king's prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.

 21But (R)the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and (S)gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.

 22The chief jailer (T)committed to Joseph's charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.

 23(U)The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph's charge because (V)the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, (W)the LORD made to prosper.

Genesis 40

Joseph Interprets a Dream
 1Then it came about after these things, (X)the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt.

 2Pharaoh was (Y)furious with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

 3So he put them in confinement in the house of the (Z)captain of the bodyguard, in the jail, the same place where Joseph was imprisoned.

 4The captain of the bodyguard put Joseph in charge of them, and he took care of them; and they were in confinement for some time.

 5Then the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt, who were confined in jail, both had a dream the same night, each man with his own dream and each dream with its own interpretation.

 6When Joseph came to them in the morning and observed them, behold, they were dejected.

 7He asked Pharaoh's officials who were with him in confinement in his master's house, "(AA)Why are your faces so sad today?"

 8Then they said to him, "(AB)We have had a dream and there is no one to interpret it " Then Joseph said to them, "(AC)Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell it to me, please."

 9So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, "In my dream, behold, there was a vine in front of me;

 10and on the vine were three branches. And as it was budding, its blossoms came out, and its clusters produced ripe grapes.

 11"Now Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; so I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I put the cup into Pharaoh's hand."

 12Then Joseph said to him, "This is the (AD)interpretation of it: the three branches are three days;

 13within three more days Pharaoh will [b]lift up your head and restore you to your office; and you will put Pharaoh's cup into his hand according to your former custom when you were his cupbearer.

 14"Only keep me in mind when it goes well with you, and please (AE)do me a kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh and get me out of this house.

 15"For (AF)I was in fact kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should have put me into the dungeon."

 16When the chief baker saw that he had interpreted favorably, he said to Joseph, "I also saw in my dream, and behold, there were three baskets of white bread on my head;

 17and in the top basket there were some of all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head."

 18Then Joseph answered and said, "This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days;

 19within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head from you and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh off you."

 20Thus it came about on the third day, which was (AG)Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; (AH)and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

 21He restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and (AI)he put the cup into Pharaoh's hand;

 22but (AJ)he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted to them.

 23Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but (AK)forgot him.

Matthew 11

John's Questions
 1(A)When Jesus had finished giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He departed from there (B)to teach and preach in their cities.

 2(C)Now when (D)John, while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples

 3and said to Him, "Are You (E)the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?"

 4Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see:

 5(F)the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the (G)POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.

 6"And blessed is he who (H)does not take offense at Me."

Jesus' Tribute to John
 7As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into (I)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

 8"But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings' palaces!

 9"But what did you go out to see? (J)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.

 10"This is the one about whom it is written,
         '(K)BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
         WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'

 11"Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

 12"(L)From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.

 13"For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

 14"And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is (M)Elijah who was to come.

 15"(N)He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

 16"But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children,

 17and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.'

 18"For John came neither (O)eating nor (P)drinking, and they say, '(Q)He has a demon!'

 19"The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, (R)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."

The Unrepenting Cities
 20Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His (S)miracles were done, because they did not repent.

 21"(T)Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, (U)Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in (V)Tyre and (W)Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in (X)sackcloth and ashes.

 22"Nevertheless I say to you, (Y)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in (Z)the day of judgment than for you.

 23"And you, (AA)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will (AB)descend to (AC)Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in (AD)Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day.

 24"Nevertheless I say to you that (AE)it will be more tolerable for the land of (AF)Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you."

Come to Me
 25(AG)At that time Jesus said, "I praise You, (AH)Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (AI)You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.

 26"Yes, (AJ)Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.

 27"(AK)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father (AL)except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

 28"(AM)Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

 29"Take My yoke upon you and (AN)learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and (AO)YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.

 30"For (AP)My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
