Exodus 14

 1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses: 2 "Tell the Israelites to turn back and camp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you must camp in front of Baal-zephon, facing it by the sea. (A) 3 Pharaoh will say of the Israelites: They are wandering around the land in confusion; the wilderness has boxed them in. 4 I will harden Pharaoh's heart so that he will pursue them. Then I will receive glory by means of Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." So the Israelites did this. (B)

   

The Egyptian Pursuit
 5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about the people and said: "What have we done? We have released Israel from serving us." 6 So he got his chariot ready and took his troops [a] with him; 7 he took 600 of the best chariots and all the rest of the chariots of Egypt, with officers in each one. 8 The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the Israelites, who were going out triumphantly. (C) [b] 9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh's horses and chariots, his horsemen, [c] and his army—chased (D) after them and caught up with them as they camped by the sea beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

    10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians coming after them. Then the Israelites were terrified and cried out (E) to the LORD for help. 11 They said to Moses: "Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you took us to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Isn't this what we told you in Egypt: Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness." (F)

    13 But Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid. Stand firm and see (G) the LORD's salvation He will provide for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. 14 The LORD will fight for you; you must be quiet." (H)

   

Escape through the Red Sea
 15 The LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the Israelites to break camp. 16 As for you, lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. (I) 17 I am going to harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them, and I will receive glory by means of Pharaoh, all his army, and his chariots and horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I receive glory through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen."

    19 Then the Angel of God, (J) who was going in front of the Israelite forces, moved and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and stood behind them. (K) 20 It came between the Egyptian and Israelite forces. The cloud was there [in] the darkness, yet it lit up the night. [d] So neither group came near the other all night long.

    21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The LORD drove the sea [back] with a powerful east wind all that night and turned the sea into dry land. So the waters were divided, (L) 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with the waters [like] a wall to them on their right and their left. (M)

    23 The Egyptians set out in pursuit—all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen—and went into the sea after them. 24 Then during the morning watch, the LORD looked down on the Egyptian forces from the pillar of fire (N) and cloud, and threw them into confusion. 25 He caused their chariot wheels to swerve [e] [f] and made them drive [g] with difficulty. "Let's get away from Israel," the Egyptians said, "because the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt!"

    26 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back on the Egyptians, on their chariots and horsemen." 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea returned to its normal depth. While the Egyptians were trying to escape from it, the LORD overthrew them in the sea. (O) 28 The waters came back and covered the chariots (P) and horsemen, the entire army of Pharaoh, that had gone after them into the sea. None of them survived.

    29 But the Israelites had walked through the sea on dry ground, with the waters [like] a wall to them on their right and their left. 30 That day the LORD saved Israel from the power of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 When Israel saw the great power that the LORD used against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and believed (Q) in Him and in His servant Moses.

Exodus 15

Israel's Song
 1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD. They said:
    I will sing to the LORD,
    for He is highly exalted;
    He has thrown the horse
    and its rider into the sea.

    2 The LORD is my strength and my song; [h]
    He has become my salvation. (R)
    This is my God, and I will praise Him,
    my father's God, and I will exalt Him. (S)

    3 The LORD is a warrior; (T)
    Yahweh is His name. (U)

    4 He threw Pharaoh's chariots
    and his army into the sea;
    the elite of his officers
    were drowned in the Red Sea. (V)

    5 The floods covered them;
    they sank to the depths like a stone. (W)

    6 LORD, Your right hand is glorious in power.
    LORD, Your right hand shattered the enemy. (X)

    7 You overthrew Your adversaries
    by Your great majesty.
    You unleashed Your burning wrath;
    it consumed them like stubble. (Y)

    8 The waters heaped up (Z) at the blast of Your nostrils;
    the currents stood firm like a dam.
    The watery depths congealed in the heart of the sea.

    9 The enemy said:
    "I will pursue, I will overtake,
    I will divide the spoil. (AA)
    My desire will be gratified at their expense.
    I will draw my sword;
    my hand will destroy [i] them."

    10 But You blew with Your breath,
    and the sea covered them.
    They sank like lead
    in the mighty waters.

    11 LORD, who is like You among the gods?
    Who is like You, glorious in holiness, (AB)
    revered with praises, performing wonders? (AC)

    12 You stretched out Your right hand,
    and the earth swallowed them.

    13 You will lead the people
    You have redeemed
    with Your faithful love;
    You will guide [them] to Your holy dwelling
    with Your strength. (AD)

    14 When the peoples hear, they will shudder;
    anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia.

    15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified; (AE)
    trembling will seize the leaders of Moab;
    the inhabitants of Canaan will panic;

    16 and terror (AF) and dread will fall on them.
    They will be as still [j] as a stone
    because of Your powerful arm
    until Your people pass by, LORD,
    until the people whom You purchased [k] pass by. (AG)

    17 You will bring them in and plant them
    on the mountain of Your possession; (AH)
    LORD, You have prepared the place
    for Your dwelling;
    Lord, [l] Your hands have established the sanctuary.

    18 The LORD will reign (AI) forever and ever!

    19 When Pharaoh's horses with his chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then Miriam the prophetess, (AJ) Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her with tambourines and dancing. (AK) 21 Miriam sang to them:
    Sing to the LORD,
    for He is highly exalted;
    He has thrown the horse
    and its rider into the sea.

   

Water Provided
 22 Then Moses led Israel on from the Red Sea, and they went out to the Wilderness of Shur. They journeyed for three days in the wilderness without finding water. 23 They came to Marah, but they could not drink the water at Marah because it was bitter—that is why it was named Marah. [m] 24 The people grumbled to Moses, "What are we going to drink?" (AL) 25 So he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree. When he threw it into the water, the water became drinkable.

    He made a statute and ordinance for them at Marah and He tested them there. (AM) 26 He said, "If you will carefully obey the LORD your God, do what is right in His eyes, pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, I will not inflict any illness on you I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you." (AN)

    27 Then they came to Elim, where there were 12 springs of water and 70 date palms, and they camped there by the waters.

Matthew 17

The Transfiguration
 1 After six days (A) Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. (B) 2 He was transformed [a] in front of them, and His face shone like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light. (C) 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

    4 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it's good for us to be here! If You want, I will make [b] three tabernacles here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (D)

    5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered [c] them, and a voice from the cloud said:

    This is My beloved Son.

    I take delight in Him.

    Listen to Him! (E)

    6 When the disciples (F) heard it, they fell facedown and were terrified.

    7 Then Jesus came up, touched them, and said, "Get up; don't be afraid." (G) 8 When they looked up they saw no one except Him [d] &md;Jesus alone. 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, (H) "Don't tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised [e] from the dead."

    10 So the disciples questioned Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" (I)

    11 "Elijah is coming [f] and will restore everything," He replied. (J) [g] 12 "But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn't recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." (K) [h] 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.

   

The Power of Faith over a Demon
 14 When they reached the crowd, (L) a man approached and knelt down before Him. 15 "Lord," he said, "have mercy on my son, because he has seizures [i] and suffers severely. He often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 I brought him to Your disciples, but they couldn't heal him." (M)

    17 Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and rebellious [j] generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to Me." (N) 18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon, [k] and it [l] came out of him, (O) and from that moment [m] the boy was healed.

    19 Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"

    20 "Because of your little faith," He [n] told them. "For I assure you: If you have faith the size of [o] a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. (P) Nothing will be impossible for you. (Q) [ 21 However, this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.] " [p]

   

The Second Prediction of His Death
 22 As (R) they were meeting [q] in Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men. 23 They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised up." And they were deeply distressed.

   

Paying the Temple Tax
 24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the double-drachma tax [r] approached Peter and said, "Doesn't your Teacher pay the double-drachma tax?" (S)

    25 "Yes," he said.

    When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, [s] "What do you think, Simon? Who do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes from? From their sons or from strangers?" (T) [t]

    26 "From strangers," he said. [u]

    "Then the sons are free," Jesus told him. 27 "But, so we won't offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and catch the first fish that comes up. When you open its mouth you'll find a coin. [v] Take it and give it to them for Me and you." (U)
