Judges 1

The Continuing Conquest of Canaan
1After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel(A) inquired of the LORD,(B) "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?" 2The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand." 3And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites.(C) And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him. 4Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek. 5They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. 7And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off(D) used to pick up scraps under my table.(E) As I have done, so God has repaid me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

8(F) And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. 9And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in(G) the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland. 10(H) And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron(I) (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated(J) Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.

11From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher. 12And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife." 13And Othniel the son of Kenaz,(K) Caleb’s younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife. 14When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you want?" 15She said to him, "Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16And the descendants of the(L) Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah(M) from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near(N) Arad,(O) and they went and settled with the people. 17(P) And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called(Q) Hormah.[a] 18Judah also(R) captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. 19(S) And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the(T) hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had(U) chariots of iron. 20(V) And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it(W) the three sons of Anak. 21But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem,(X) so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

22The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel,(Y) and the LORD was with them. 23And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. ((Z) Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.) 24And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Please show us the way into the city,(AA) and we will deal kindly with you." 25And he showed them the way into the city. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. 26And the man went to(AB) the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day.

Failure to Complete the Conquest
27(AC) Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 28When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.

29(AD) And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

30Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of(AE) Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.

31(AF) Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, 32so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

33Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of(AG) Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.

34(AH) The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres,(AI) in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor. 36And the border of the Amorites ran from(AJ) the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.

Judges 2

Israel’s Disobedience
1Now the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to(AK) Bochim. And he said, "I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said,(AL) 'I will never break my covenant with you, 2(AM) and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land;(AN) you shall break down their altars.' But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done? 3So now I say,(AO) I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become(AP) thorns in your sides,[b] and their gods shall be a snare to you." 4As soon as the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept. 5And they called the name of that place Bochim.[c] And they sacrificed there to the LORD.
The Death of Joshua
6When Joshua dismissed the people, the people of Israel went each to his inheritance to take possession of the land. 7(AQ) And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the LORD had done for Israel. 8And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110 years. 9And they buried him within the boundaries of(AR) his inheritance in Timnath-heres,(AS) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash. 10And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel.
Israel’s Unfaithfulness
11(AT) And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. 12(AU) And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt.(AV) They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and(AW) bowed down to them.(AX) And they provoked the LORD to anger. 13They abandoned the LORD(AY) and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. 14(AZ) So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he(BA) gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them.(BB) And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies,(BC) so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. 15Whenever they marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had warned,(BD) and as the LORD had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.
The LORD Raises Up Judges
16(BE) Then the LORD raised up judges,(BF) who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17Yet they did not listen to their judges, for(BG) they whored after other gods and bowed down to them.(BH) They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the LORD, and they did not do so. 18Whenever the LORD raised up judges for them,(BI) the LORD was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge.(BJ) For the LORD was moved to pity by(BK) their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. 19But(BL) whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. 20(BM) So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he said, "Because this people(BN) has transgressed my covenant that I commanded their fathers and have not obeyed my voice, 21(BO) I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22in order(BP) to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the LORD as their fathers did, or not." 23So the LORD left those nations, not driving them out quickly, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

Judges 3

1(BQ) Now these are the nations that the LORD left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan. 2It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before. 3These are the nations:(BR) the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath. 4They were for(BS) the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. 5So the people of Israel lived(BT) among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6(BU) And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.

Othniel
7(BV) And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and(BW) the Asheroth. 8Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel,(BX) and he sold them into the hand of(BY) Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. 9But when the people of Israel(BZ) cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a(CA) deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them,(CB) Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10(CC) The Spirit of the LORD was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. 11(CD) So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
Ehud
12(CE) And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon(CF) the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD. 13He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the(CG) Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of(CH) the city of palms. 14And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15Then the people of Israel(CI) cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them(CJ) a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. 16And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit[d] in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his clothes. 17And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. 19But he himself turned back(CK) at the idols near Gilgal and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." And he commanded, "Silence." And all his attendants went out from his presence. 20And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his(CL) cool roof chamber.(CM) And Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." And he arose from his seat. 21And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the dung came out. 23Then Ehud went out into the porch[e] and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him(CN) and locked them.

24When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought,(CO) "Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber." 25And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor.

26Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond(CP) the idols and escaped to Seirah. 27When he arrived,(CQ) he sounded the trumpet in(CR) the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader. 28And he said to them, "Follow after me,(CS) for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand." So they went down after him and seized(CT) the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over. 29And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped. 30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel.(CU) And the land had rest for eighty years.

Shamgar
31After him was(CV) Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines(CW) with an oxgoad, and he also(CX) saved Israel.

Luke 4

The Temptation of Jesus
1(A) And Jesus,(B) full of the Holy Spirit,(C) returned from the Jordan and was led(D) by the Spirit in the wilderness 2for(E) forty days,(F) being tempted by the devil.(G) And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3The devil said to him, "If you are(H) the Son of God, command(I) this stone to become bread." 4And Jesus answered him, (J) "It is written,(K) 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'" 5(L) And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6and said to him, "To you(M) I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." 8And Jesus answered him, (N) "It is written,

   (O) "'You shall worship the Lord your God,
and(P) him only shall you serve.'"

9(Q) And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are(R) the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10for it is written,

   (S) "'He will command his angels concerning you,
   to guard you,'

 11and

   (T) "'On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"

12And Jesus answered him, "It is said,(U) 'You shall not(V) put the Lord your God to the test.'" 13And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him(W) until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry
14(X) And Jesus returned(Y) in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and(Z) a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15And(AA) he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16(AB) And he came to(AC) Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And(AD) as was his custom,(AE) he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up(AF) to read. 17And(AG) the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18(AH) "The Spirit of the Lord(AI) is upon me,
   because he has anointed me
to(AJ) proclaim good news to the poor.
(AK) He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and(AL) recovering of sight to the blind,
(AM) to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

19(AN) to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."

20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and(AO) sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were(AP) fixed on him. 21And he began to say to them, "Today(AQ) this Scripture(AR) has been fulfilled in your hearing." 22And all spoke well of him and marveled at(AS) the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said,(AT) "Is not this(AU) Joseph’s son?" 23And he said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,(AV) 'Physician, heal yourself.' What we have heard you did(AW) at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well." 24And he said, "Truly, I say to you,(AX) no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when(AY) the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26and Elijah was sent to none of them(AZ) but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27And(BA) there were many lepers[a] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed,(BB) but only Naaman the Syrian." 28When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29And they rose up and(BC) drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30But(BD) passing through their midst, he went away.
