Genesis 49

Jacob Blesses His Sons
 1(A) Then Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you(B) in days to come.
 2"Assemble and listen, O sons of Jacob,
   listen to Israel your father.

 3"Reuben, you are(C) my firstborn,
   my might, and the(D) firstfruits of my strength,
   preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
4Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
   because you(E) went up to your father’s bed;
   then you defiled it—he went up to my couch!

 5(F) "Simeon and Levi are brothers;
   weapons(G) of violence are their swords.
6Let my soul come not into their council;
   (H) O my glory,(I) be not joined to their company.
For in their anger they killed men,
   and in their willfulness they(J) hamstrung oxen.
7Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce,
   and their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will(K) divide them in Jacob
   and scatter them in Israel.

 8"Judah,(L) your brothers shall praise you;
   (M) your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
   (N) your father’s sons shall bow down before you.
9Judah is(O) a lion’s cub;
   from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(P) He stooped down; he crouched as a lion
   and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?
10The(Q) scepter shall not depart from Judah,
   nor the ruler’s staff(R) from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him;[a]
   and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11Binding his foal to the vine
   and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
he has washed his garments in wine
   and his vesture in the blood of grapes.
12His(S) eyes are darker than wine,
   and his teeth whiter than milk.

 13(T) "Zebulun shall dwell at the(U) shore of the sea;
   he shall become a haven for ships,
   and his border shall be at Sidon.

 14(V) "Issachar is a strong donkey,
   crouching between the sheepfolds.[b]
15He saw that a resting place was good,
   and that the land was pleasant,
so he bowed his shoulder to bear,
   and(W) became a servant at forced labor.

 16(X) "Dan shall(Y) judge his people
   as one of the tribes of Israel.
17Dan(Z) shall be a serpent in the way,
   a viper by the path,
that bites the horse’s heels
   so that his rider falls backward.
18I(AA) wait for your salvation, O LORD.

 19(AB) "Raiders shall raid(AC) Gad,[c]
   but he shall raid at their heels.

 20(AD) "Asher’s food shall be rich,
   and he shall yield royal delicacies.

 21(AE) "Naphtali is a doe let loose
   that bears beautiful fawns.[d]

 22"Joseph is(AF) a fruitful bough,
   a fruitful bough by a spring;
   his branches run over the wall.[e]
23The archers(AG) bitterly attacked him,
   shot at him, and harassed him severely,
24yet(AH) his bow remained unmoved;
   his arms[f] were made agile
by the hands of the(AI) Mighty One of Jacob
   (from there is(AJ) the Shepherd,[g](AK) the Stone of Israel),
25(AL) by the God of your father who will help you,
   by(AM) the Almighty[h](AN) who will bless you
   with blessings of heaven above,
blessings of the deep that crouches beneath,
   blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26The blessings of your father
   are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents,
   up to the bounties(AO) of the everlasting hills.[i]
May they be(AP) on the head of Joseph,
   and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers.

 27(AQ) "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf,
   in the morning devouring the prey
   and at evening(AR) dividing the spoil."

Jacob’s Death and Burial
 28All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him. 29Then he commanded them and said to them, "I am to be(AS) gathered to my people;(AT) bury me with my fathers(AU) in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30in the cave that is in the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan,(AV) which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 31(AW) There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There(AX) they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah— 32the field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites." 33When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and(AY) was gathered to his people.

Genesis 50

 1Then Joseph(AZ) fell on his father’s face and wept over him and kissed him. 2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to(BA) embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3Forty days were required for it, for that is how many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians(BB) wept for him seventy days.

 4And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying,(BC) "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5My father made me swear, saying, 'I am about to die: in my tomb(BD) that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.' Now therefore, let me please go up and bury my father. Then I will return." 6And Pharaoh answered, "Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear." 7So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left(BE) in the land of Goshen. 9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company. 10When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan,(BF) they lamented there with a very great and grievous lamentation, and he(BG) made a mourning for his father seven days. 11When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians." Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim;[j] it is beyond the Jordan. 12Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them, 13for(BH) his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham(BI) bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 14After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

God’s Good Purposes
 15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him." 16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave this command before he died, 17'Say to Joseph, Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.' And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of(BJ) the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18His brothers also came and(BK) fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants." 19But Joseph said to them, "Do not fear, for(BL) am I in the place of God? 20As for you, you meant evil against me, but(BM) God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people[k] should be kept alive, as they are today. 21So do not fear;(BN) I will provide for you and your little ones." Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
The Death of Joseph
 22So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father’s house. Joseph lived 110 years. 23And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children(BO) of the third generation. The(BP) children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were(BQ) counted as Joseph’s own.[l] 24And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but(BR) God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land(BS) that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob." 25Then(BT) Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here." 26So Joseph died, being 110 years old. They(BU) embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

The Mustard Seed and the Leaven
 31He put another parable before them, saying, (A) "The kingdom of heaven is like(B) a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches."

 33He told them another parable. (C) "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in(D) three measures of flour, till it was(E) all leavened."

Prophecy and Parables
 34(F) All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. 35This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:[a]

   (G) "I will open my mouth in parables;
   (H) I will utter what has been hidden(I) since the foundation of the world."
The Parable of the Weeds Explained
 36Then he left the crowds and went into(J) the house. And his disciples came to him, saying,(K) "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field." 37He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38The field is the world, and the good seed is(L) the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are(M) the sons of the evil one, 39and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.(N) The harvest is(O) the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40Just as the weeds(P) are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at(Q) the close of the age. 41(R) The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all(S) causes of sin and(T) all law-breakers, 42(U) and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place(V) there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43Then(W) the righteous will shine like the sun(X) in the kingdom of their Father.(Y) He who has ears, let him hear.
The Parable of the Hidden Treasure
 44"The kingdom of heaven(Z) is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy(AA) he goes and sells all that he has and(AB) buys that field.
The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value
 45"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46who, on finding(AC) one pearl of great value,(AD) went and sold all that he had and(AE) bought it.
The Parable of the Net
 47"Again, the kingdom of heaven is(AF) like a net that was thrown into the sea and(AG) gathered fish of every kind. 48When it was full,(AH) men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49So it will be at(AI) the close of the age. The angels will come out and(AJ) separate the evil from the righteous 50(AK) and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
New and Old Treasures
 51(AL) "Have you understood all these things?" They said to him, "Yes." 52And he said to them, "Therefore every(AM) scribe(AN) who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who(AO) brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old."
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
 53And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, 54(AP) and coming to(AQ) his hometown(AR) he taught them in their synagogue, so that(AS) they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55(AT) Is not this(AU) the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not(AV) his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" 57And(AW) they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, (AX) "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household." 58And he did not do many mighty works there,(AY) because of their unbelief.
