Leviticus 4

1AND THE Lord said to Moses,

2Say to the Israelites, If anyone shall sin through error or unwittingly in any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and shall do any one of them--

3If it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then let him offer for his sin which he has committed a young bull without blemish to the Lord as a sin offering.(A)

4He shall bring the bull to the door of the Tent of Meeting before the Lord, and shall lay [both] his hands on the bull's head and kill [it] before the Lord.

    5And the anointed priest shall take some of the bull's blood and bring it into the Tent of Meeting;

6And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of [it] seven times before the Lord before the veil of the sanctuary.

7And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the Lord which is in the Tent of Meeting; and all the rest of the blood of the bull shall he pour out at the base of the altar of the burnt offering at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

8And all the fat of the bull for the sin offering he shall take off of it--the fat that covers and is on the entrails,

9And the two kidneys and the fat that is on them at the loins, and the appendage of the liver, which he shall take away with the kidneys--

10Just as these are taken off of the bull of the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.

11But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, its head, its legs, its entrails, and its dung,

12Even the whole bull shall he carry forth without the camp to a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on a fire of wood, there where the ashes are poured out.(B)

13If the whole congregation of Israel sins unintentionally, and it be hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done what the Lord has commanded not to be done and are guilty,

14When the sin which they have committed becomes known, then the congregation shall offer a young bull for a sin offering and bring it before the Tent of Meeting.

15The elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bull before the Lord, and the bull shall be killed before the Lord.

16The anointed priest shall bring some of the bull's blood to the Tent of Meeting,

17And shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord, before the veil [which screens the ark of the covenant].

18He shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar [of incense] which is before the Lord in the Tent of Meeting, and he shall pour out all the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering near the door of the Tent of Meeting.

19And he shall take all its fat from the bull and burn it on the altar.

20Thus shall he do with the bull; as he did with the bull for a sin offering, so shall he do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for [the people], and they shall be forgiven.

21And he shall carry forth the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering for the congregation.

22When a ruler or leader sins and unwittingly does any one of the things the Lord his God has forbidden, and is guilty,

23If his sin which he has committed be known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish.

24He shall lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord; it is a sin offering.

25The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering.

26And he shall burn all its fat upon the altar like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings; so the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.

27If any one of the common people sins unwittingly in doing anything the Lord has commanded not to be done, and is guilty,

28When the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed.

29The offender shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill [it] at the place of the burnt offering.

30And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and shall pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar.

31And all the fat of it he shall take away, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall burn it on the altar for a sweet and satisfying fragrance to the Lord; and the priest shall make atonement for [the man], and he shall be forgiven.

32If he brings a lamb as his sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish.

33He shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering.

34And the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and all the rest of the blood of the lamb he shall pour out at the base of the altar.

35And he shall take away all the fat of it, just as the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn it on the altar upon the offerings made by fire to the Lord; and the priest shall make atonement for the sin which the man has committed, and he shall be forgiven.(C)

Leviticus 5

1IF ANYONE sins in that he is sworn to testify and has knowledge of the matter, either by seeing or hearing of it, but fails to report it, then he shall bear his iniquity and willfulness.

2Or if anyone touches an unclean thing, whether the carcass of an unclean wild beast or of an unclean domestic animal or of unclean creeping things that multiply prolifically, even if he is unaware of it, and he has become unclean, he is guilty.

3Or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever kind the uncleanness may be with which he becomes defiled, and he is unaware of it, when he does know it, then he shall be guilty.

4Or if anyone unthinkingly swears he will do something, whether to do evil or good, whatever it may be that a man shall pronounce rashly taking an oath, then, when he becomes aware of it, he shall be guilty in either of these.(D)

5When a man is guilty in one of these, he shall confess the sin he has committed.

6He shall bring his guilt or trespass offering to the Lord for the sin which he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for his sin.

7But if he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring for his guilt offering to the Lord two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.

    8He shall bring them to the priest, who shall offer the one for the sin offering first, and wring its head from its neck, but shall not sever it;

9And he shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, and the rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar; it is a sin offering.

10And he shall prepare the second bird for a burnt offering, according to the ordinance; and the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin which he has committed, and he shall be forgiven.

11But if the offender cannot afford to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then he shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil or frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering.

12He shall bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar, on the offerings made by fire to the Lord; it is a sin offering.

13Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin that he has committed in any of these things, and he shall be forgiven; and the remainder shall be for the priest, as in the cereal offering.

14And the Lord said to Moses,

15If anyone commits a breach of faith and sins unwittingly in the holy things of the Lord, he shall bring his trespass or guilt offering to the Lord, a ram without blemish out of the flock, valued by you in shekels of silver, that is, the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass or guilt offering.

16And he shall make restitution for what he has done amiss in the holy thing, and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass or guilt offering, and he shall be forgiven.

17If anyone sins and does any of the things the Lord has forbidden, though he was not aware of it, yet he is guilty and shall bear his iniquity.(E)

18He shall bring [to the priest] a ram without blemish out of the flock, estimated by you to the amount [of the trespass], for a guilt or trespass offering; and the priest shall make atonement for him for the error which he committed unknowingly, and he shall be forgiven.

19It is a trespass or guilt offering; he is certainly guilty before the Lord.

Matthew 24:29-51

View commentary related to this passage

29Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.(A)

30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn and [a]beat their breasts and lament in anguish, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory [in brilliancy and splendor].(B)

31And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect (His chosen ones) from the four winds, [even] from one end of the [b]universe to the other.(C)

32From the fig tree learn this lesson: as soon as its [c]young shoots become soft and tender and it puts out its leaves, you know [d]of a surety that summer is near.

33So also when you see these signs, [e]all taken together, coming to pass, you may know [f]of a surety that He is near, at the very doors.

34Truly I tell you, this generation ([g]the whole multitude of people living at the same time, [h]in a definite, [i]given period) will not pass away till all these things [j]taken together take place.

35[k]Sky and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

36But of that [exact] day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

37As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

38For just as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, [men] marrying and [women] being given in marriage, until the [very] day when Noah went into the ark,

39And they did not know or understand until the flood came and swept them all away--so will be the coming of the Son of Man.(D)

40At that time two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.

41Two women will be grinding at the hand mill; one will be taken and one will be left.

42Watch therefore [[l]give strict attention, be cautious and active], for you do not know in what kind of a day [[m]whether a near or remote one] your Lord is coming.

43But understand this: had the householder known in what [part of the night, whether in a [n]night or a morning] watch the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have allowed his house to be [o]undermined and broken into.

44You also must be ready therefore, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not expect Him.

45Who then is the faithful, thoughtful, and wise servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household to give to the others the food and supplies at the proper time?

46Blessed (happy, fortunate, and [p]to be envied) is that servant whom, when his master comes, he will find so doing.

47I solemnly declare to you, he will set him over all his possessions.

48But if that servant is wicked and says to himself, My master is delayed and is going to be gone a long time,

49And begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with the drunken,

50The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour of which he is not aware,

51And will punish him [[q]cut him up by scourging] and put him with the pretenders (hypocrites); there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
