| Leviticus 17-18 View commentary related to this passage Leviticus 171AND THE Lord said to Moses, 2Tell Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites, This is what the Lord has commanded: 3If any man of the house of Israel kills an ox or lamb or goat in the camp or kills it outside the camp 4And does not bring it to the door of the Tent of Meeting to offer it as an offering to the Lord before the Lord's tabernacle, [guilt for shedding] [a]blood shall be imputed to that man; he has shed blood and shall be cut off from among his people. 5This is so that the Israelites, rather than offer their sacrifices [to idols] in the open field [where they slew them], may bring them to the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting, to the priest, to offer them as peace offerings to the Lord. 6And the priest shall dash the blood on the altar of the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting and burn the fat for a sweet and satisfying fragrance to the Lord. 7So they shall no more offer their sacrifices to goatlike gods or demons or field spirits after which they have played the harlot. This shall be a statute forever to them throughout their generations. 8And you shall say to them, Whoever of the house of Israel or of the strangers who dwell temporarily among you offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9And does not bring it to the door of the Tent of Meeting to offer it to the Lord shall be cut off from among his people. 10Any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who dwell temporarily among them who eats any kind of blood, against that person I will set My face and I will cut him off from among his people [that he may not be included in the atonement made for them].(A) 11For the life (the animal soul) is in the blood, and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life [which it represents].(B) 12Therefore I have said to the Israelites, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who dwells temporarily among you eat blood. 13And any of the Israelites or of the strangers who sojourn among them who takes in hunting any clean beast or bird shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust. 14As for the life of all flesh, the blood of it represents the life of it; therefore I said to the Israelites, You shall partake of the blood of no kind of flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats of it shall be cut off. 15And every person who eats what dies of itself or was torn by beasts, whether he is native-born or a temporary resident, shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until evening; then shall he be clean.(C) 16But if he does not wash his clothes or bathe his body, he shall bear his own iniquity [for it shall not be borne by the sacrifice of atonement].Leviticus 181AND THE Lord said to Moses, 2Say to the Israelites, I am the Lord your God. 3You shall not do as was done in the land of Egypt in which you dwelt, nor shall you do as is done in the land of Canaan to which I am bringing you; neither shall you walk in their statutes. 4You shall do My ordinances and keep My statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. 5You shall therefore keep My statutes and My ordinances which, if a man does, he shall live by them. I am the Lord.(D) 6None of you shall approach anyone close of kin to him to have sexual relations. I am the Lord. 7The nakedness of your father, which is the nakedness of your mother, you shall not uncover; she is your mother; you shall not have intercourse with her. 8The nakedness of your father's wife you shall not uncover; it is your father's nakedness. 9You shall not have intercourse with or uncover the nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father or of your mother, whether born at home or born abroad. 10You must not have sexual relations with your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter; their nakedness you shall not uncover, for they are your own flesh. 11You must not have intercourse with your father's wife's daughter; begotten by your father, she is your sister; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 12You shall not have intercourse with your father's sister; she is your father's near kinswoman. 13You shall not have sexual relations with your mother's sister, for she is your mother's near kinswoman. 14You shall not have intercourse with your father's brother's wife; you shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt. 15You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law; she is your son's wife; you shall not have intercourse with her. 16You shall not have intercourse with your brother's wife; she belongs to your brother. 17You shall not marry a woman and her daughter, nor shall you take her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter to have intercourse; they are [her] near kinswomen; it is wickedness and an outrageous offense. 18You must not marry a woman in addition to her sister, to be a rival to her, having sexual relations with the second sister when the first one is alive. 19Also you shall not have intercourse with a woman during her [menstrual period or similar] uncleanness. 20Moreover, you shall not lie carnally with your neighbor's wife, to defile yourself with her. 21You shall not give any of your children to pass through the fire and sacrifice them to Molech [the fire god], nor shall you profane the name of your God [by giving it to false gods]. I am the Lord. 22You shall not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.(E) 23Neither shall you lie with any beast and defile yourself with it; neither shall any woman yield herself to a beast to lie with it; it is confusion, perversion, and degradedly carnal. 24Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, for in all these things the nations are defiled which I am casting out before you. 25And the land is defiled; therefore I visit the iniquity of it upon it, and the land itself vomits out her inhabitants. 26So you shall keep My statutes and My ordinances and shall not commit any of these abominations, neither the native-born nor any stranger who sojourns among you, 27For all these abominations have the men of the land done who were before you, and the land is defiled-- 28[Do none of these things] lest the land spew you out when you defile it as it spewed out the nation that was before you. 29Whoever commits any of these abominations shall be cut off from among [his] people. 30So keep My charge: do not practice any of these abominable customs which were practiced before you and defile yourselves by them. I am the Lord your God.Footnotes:

| Matthew 27:27-50 View commentary related to this passage 27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the palace, and they gathered the whole battalion about Him. 28And they stripped off His clothes and put a scarlet robe ([a]garment of dignity and office worn by Roman officers of rank) upon Him, 29And, weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed (staff) in His right hand. And kneeling before Him, they made sport of Him, saying, Hail (greetings, good health to You, long life to You), King of the Jews! 30And they spat on Him, and took the reed (staff) and struck Him on the head. 31And when they finished making sport of Him, they stripped Him of the robe and put His own garments on Him and led Him away to be crucified. 32As they were marching forth, they came upon a man of Cyrene named Simon; this man they forced to carry the cross of Jesus. 33And when they came to a place called Golgotha [Latin: Calvary], which means The Place of a Skull, 34They offered Him wine mingled with gall to drink; but when He tasted it, He refused to drink it. 35And when they had crucified Him, they divided and distributed His garments [among them] by casting lots [b]so that the prophet's saying was fulfilled, They parted My garments among them and over My apparel they cast lots.(A) 36Then they sat down there and kept watch over Him. 37And over His head they put the accusation against Him ([c]the cause of His death), which read, This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. 38At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right hand and one on the left. 39And those who passed by spoke reproachfully and abusively and jeered at Him, wagging their heads,(B) 40And they said, You Who would tear down the [d]sanctuary of the temple and rebuild it in three days, rescue Yourself [e]from death. If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, made sport of Him, saying, 42He rescued others [f]from death; Himself He cannot rescue [g]from death. He is the King of Israel? Let Him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in and [h]acknowledge and cleave to Him. 43He trusts in God; let God deliver Him now if He cares for Him and will have Him, for He said, I am the Son of God. 44And the robbers who were crucified with Him also abused and reproached and made sport of Him in the same way. 45Now from the sixth hour (noon) there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour (three o'clock). 46And about the ninth hour (three o'clock) Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?--that is, My God, My God, why have You abandoned Me [leaving Me [i]helpless, forsaking and failing Me in My need]?(C) 47And some of the bystanders, when they heard it, said, This Man is calling for Elijah! 48And one of them immediately ran and took a sponge, soaked it with vinegar (a sour wine), and put it on a reed (staff), and was [j]about to give it to Him to drink.(D) 49But the others said, Wait! Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him [k]from death. 50And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.Footnotes:
