Exodus 39

 1AND OF the blue and purple and scarlet [stuff] they made finely wrought garments for serving in the Holy Place; they made the holy garments for Aaron, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

    2And Bezalel made the ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet [stuff], and fine twined linen.

    3And they beat the gold into thin sheets and cut it into wires to work into the blue, purple, and scarlet [stuff] and the fine linen, in skilled design.

    4They made shoulder pieces for the ephod, joined to it at its two edges.

    5And the skillfully woven band on it, to gird it on, was of the same piece and workmanship with it, of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet [stuff], and fine twined linen, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

    6And they prepared the onyx stones enclosed in settings of gold filigree and engraved as signets are engraved with the names of the sons of Israel.

    7And he put them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod to be stones of memorial or remembrance for the Israelites, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

    8And [Bezalel] made the breastplate skillfully, like the work of the ephod, of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet [stuff], and fine twined linen.

    9The breastplate was a [hand's] span square when doubled over.

    10And they set in it four rows of stones; a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle made the first row;

    11The second row an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond;

    12The third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;

    13And the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper; they were enclosed in settings of gold filigree.

    14There were twelve stones with their names according to those of the sons of Israel, engraved like a signet, each with its name, according to the twelve tribes.

    15And they made [at the ends] of the breastplate twisted chains like cords, of pure gold.

    16And they made two settings of gold filigree and two gold rings which they put on the two ends of the breastplate.

    17And they put the two twisted cords or woven chains of gold in the two rings on the end edges of the breastplate.

    18And the other two ends of the twisted cords or chains of gold they put on the two settings and put them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod, in front.

    19They made two rings of gold and put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on the inside edge of it next to the ephod.

    20And they made two [other] gold rings and attached them to the two shoulder pieces of the ephod underneath, in front, at its joining above the skillfully woven band of the ephod.

    21They bound the breastplate by its rings to those of the ephod with a blue lace, that it might lie upon the skillfully woven band of the ephod and that the breastplate might not be loosed from the ephod, as the Lord commanded Moses.

    22And he made the robe of the ephod of woven work all of blue.

    23And there was an opening [for the head] in the middle of the robe like the hole in a coat of mail, with a binding around it, that it should not be torn.

    24On the skirts of the robe they made pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet [stuff] and twined linen.

    25And they made bells of pure gold and put [them] between the pomegranates around the skirts of the robe;

    26A bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate, round about on the skirts of the robe for ministering, as the Lord commanded Moses.

    27And they made the long and sleeved tunics woven of fine linen for Aaron and his sons,

    28And the turban, and the ornamental caps of fine linen, and the breeches of fine twined linen,

    29The girdle or sash of fine twined linen, and blue, purple, and scarlet embroidery, as the Lord commanded Moses.

    30And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold and wrote upon it an inscription, like the engravings of a signet, HOLY TO THE LORD.(A)

    31They tied to it a lace of blue to fasten it on the turban above, as the Lord commanded Moses.

    32Thus all the work of the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting was finished; according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so the Israelites had done.

    33And they brought the tabernacle to Moses: the tent and all its furnishings, its clasps, its [frame] boards, its bars, its pillars, its sockets or bases;

    34And the covering of rams' skins made red, and the covering of dolphin or porpoise skins, and the veil of the screen;

    35The ark of the Testimony, its poles, and the mercy seat;

    36The table and all its utensils, and the showbread (bread of the Presence);

    37The pure [gold] lampstand and its lamps, with the lamps set in order, all its utensils, and the oil for the light;

    38The golden altar, the anointing oil, the fragrant incense, and the hanging for the door of the tent;

    39The bronze altar and its grate of bronze, its poles and all its utensils; the laver and its base;

    40The hangings of the court, its pillars and sockets or bases, and the screen for the court gate, its cords, and pegs, and all the utensils for the service of the tabernacle, for the Tent of Meeting [of God with His people];(B)

    41The finely worked vestments for ministering in the Holy Place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons to minister as priests.

    42According to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the Israelites had done all the work.

    43And Moses inspected all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the Lord had commanded, so had they done it. And Moses blessed them.

Exodus 40

 1AND THE Lord said to Moses,

    2On the first day of the first month you shall set up the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting [of God with you].

    3And you shall put in it the ark of the Testimony and screen the ark [of God's Presence] with the veil.(C)

    4You shall bring in the [showbread] table and set in order the things that are to be upon it; and you shall bring in the lampstand and set up and light its lamps.(D)

    5You shall set the golden altar for the incense before the ark of the Testimony [outside the veil] and put the hanging or screen at the tabernacle door.

    6You shall set the altar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.

    7And you shall [a]set the laver between the Tent of Meeting and the altar and put water in it.

    8And you shall set up the court [curtains] round about and hang up the hanging or screen at the court gate.

    9You shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and shall consecrate it and all its furniture, and it shall be holy.

    10You shall anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; and consecrate (set apart for God) the altar, and the altar shall be most holy.

    11And you shall anoint the laver and its base and consecrate it.

    12You shall bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the Tent of Meeting and wash them with water.(E)

    13You shall put on Aaron the holy garments, and anoint and consecrate him, so he may serve Me as priest.

    14And you shall bring his sons and put long and sleeved tunics on them,

    15And you shall anoint them as you anointed their father, that they may minister to Me as priests; for their anointing shall be to them for an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.

    16Thus did Moses; according to all that the Lord commanded him, so he did.

    17And on the first day of the first month in the second year the tabernacle was erected.

    18Moses set up the tabernacle, laid its sockets, set up its boards, put in its bars, and erected its pillars.

    19[Moses] spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it, as the Lord had commanded him.

    20He took the Testimony [the Ten Commandments] and put it into the ark, and set the poles [in the rings] on the ark, and put the mercy seat on top of the ark.

    21[Moses] brought the ark into the tabernacle and set up the veil of the screen and screened the ark of the Testimony, as the Lord had commanded him.

    22Moses put the table [of showbread] in the Tent of Meeting on the north side of the tabernacle outside the veil;

    23He set the bread [of the Presence] in order on it before the Lord, as the Lord had commanded him.(F)

    24And he put the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle.

    25Moses set up and lighted the lamps before the Lord, as the Lord commanded him.

    26He put the golden altar [of incense] in the Tent of Meeting before the veil;

    27He burned sweet incense [symbol of prayer] upon it, as the Lord commanded him.(G)

    28And he set up the hanging or screen at the door of the tabernacle.

    29[Moses] put the altar of burnt offering at the door of the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting and offered on it the burnt offering and the cereal offering, as the Lord commanded him.

    30And Moses set the laver between the Tent of Meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing.

    31And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet there.

    32When they went into the Tent of Meeting or came near the altar, they washed, as the Lord commanded Moses.

    33And he erected the court round about the tabernacle and the altar and set up the hanging or screen at the court gate. So Moses finished the work.

    34Then the cloud [the Shekinah, God's visible presence] covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle!(H)

    35And Moses was not able to enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud remained upon it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

    36In all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the Israelites went onward;

    37But if the cloud was not taken up, they did not journey on till the day that it was taken up.

    38For throughout all their journeys the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.

Footnotes:
  1. Exodus 40:7 Why was it necessary for one exact position for the laver to be demanded of Moses by God? Those who have published charts of the tabernacle furniture arrangement, with the laver off to one side or the other of the door into the sanctuary, have missed a point here. The laver was to be placed directly "between [the doors of] the Tent of Meeting and the altar [of burnt offering]," thus completing the "cross" made by the arrangement of the furniture, from the ark to the altar. It could have no significance to the Jews of that time, but the One Who planned it had those in mind to whom Christ would one day say, "And these [very Scriptures] testify about Me!" (John 5:39.) How fitting that at the foot of that "cross" there should be the altar, picturing our complete surrender, and then the laver, picturing our cleansing, that we may enter in through Him Who alone is "the Door" to the eternal Holy of Holies (John 10:1-9).

23Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law--right and justice and mercy and fidelity. These you ought [particularly] to have done, without neglecting the others.

    24You blind guides, filtering out a gnat and gulping down a [a]camel!(A)

    25Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but within they are full of extortion (prey, spoil, plunder) and grasping self-indulgence.

    26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and of the plate, so that the outside may be clean also.

    27Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you are like tombs that have been whitewashed, which look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead men's bones and everything impure.

    28Just so, you also outwardly seem to people to be just and upright but inside you are full of pretense and lawlessness and iniquity.(B)

    29Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

    30Saying, If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have aided them in shedding the blood of the prophets.

    31Thus you are testifying against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

    32Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' sins to the brim [so [b]that nothing may be wanting to a full measure].

    33You serpents! You spawn of vipers! How can you escape the [c]penalty to be suffered in hell (Gehenna)?

    34Because of this, take notice: I am sending you prophets and wise men (interpreters and teachers) and scribes (men learned in the Mosaic Law and the Prophets); some of them you will kill, even crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue and persecute from town to town,

    35So that upon your heads may come all the blood of the righteous ([d]those who correspond to the divine standard of right) shed on earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar [of burnt offering].(C)

    36Truly I declare to you, all these [[e]evil, calamitous times] will come upon this generation. [II Chron. 36:15, 16.]

    37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, murdering the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a mother fowl gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!

    38Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate (abandoned and left destitute of God's help). [I Kings 9:7; Jer. 22:5.]

    39For I declare to you, you will not see Me again until you say, Blessed (magnified in worship, adored, and exalted) is He Who comes in the name of the Lord!(D)
