⁴ John came baptizing^[a](A) in the wilderness^(B) and preaching a baptism of repentance^[b](C) for the forgiveness^(D) of sins.^{(E) 5} The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem^(F) were flocking to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan^(G) River as they confessed^(H) their sins.^{(I) 6} John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts^(J) and wild honey.^{(K) 7} He was preaching: “Someone more powerful^(L) than I will come after me.^(M) I am not worthy^(N) to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals.^{(O) 8} I have baptized you with^[c] water,^(P) but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”^(Q)
