⁴ For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,^(A) so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

²³ The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, ²⁴ but also for us,^(A) to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him^(B) who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.^(C)

⁹ We should not test Christ,^[a](A) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.^{(B) 10} And do not grumble, as some of them did^(C)—and were killed^(D) by the destroying angel.^(E)

¹¹ These things happened to them as examples^(F) and were written down as warnings for us,^(G) on whom the culmination of the ages has come.^(H)

³ You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,^(A) not on tablets of stone^(B) but on tablets of human hearts.^(C)

²⁰ Above all, you must understand^(A) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. ²¹ For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God^(B) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.^(C)
