Psalm 6[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to sheminith.[b] A psalm of David.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger(A)
    or discipline me in your wrath.
Have mercy on me,(B) Lord, for I am faint;(C)
    heal me,(D) Lord, for my bones are in agony.(E)
My soul is in deep anguish.(F)
    How long,(G) Lord, how long?

Turn,(H) Lord, and deliver me;
    save me because of your unfailing love.(I)
Among the dead no one proclaims your name.
    Who praises you from the grave?(J)

I am worn out(K) from my groaning.(L)

All night long I flood my bed with weeping(M)
    and drench my couch with tears.(N)
My eyes grow weak(O) with sorrow;
    they fail because of all my foes.

Away from me,(P) all you who do evil,(Q)
    for the Lord has heard my weeping.
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;(R)
    the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish;(S)
    they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame.(T)

  1. Psalm 6:1 In Hebrew texts 6:1-10 is numbered 6:2-11.
  2. Psalm 6:1 Title: Probably a musical term

16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake(A) the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery,(B) and performed those great signs(C) before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out(D) before us all the nations,(E) including the Amorites, who lived in the land.(F) We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.(G)

19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God;(H) he is a jealous God.(I) He will not forgive(J) your rebellion(K) and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord(L) and serve foreign gods, he will turn(M) and bring disaster(N) on you and make an end of you,(O) after he has been good to you.”

21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”

22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses(P) against yourselves that you have chosen(Q) to serve the Lord.”

“Yes, we are witnesses,(R)” they replied.

23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods(S) that are among you and yield your hearts(T) to the Lord, the God of Israel.”

24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.”(U)

25 On that day Joshua made a covenant(V) for the people, and there at Shechem(W) he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws.(X) 26 And Joshua recorded(Y) these things in the Book of the Law of God.(Z) Then he took a large stone(AA) and set it up there under the oak(AB) near the holy place of the Lord.

27 “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone(AC) will be a witness(AD) against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue(AE) to your God.”(AF)

28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.(AG)

Buried in the Promised Land(AH)

29 After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died(AI) at the age of a hundred and ten.(AJ) 30 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah[a](AK) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.(AL)

31 Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders(AM) who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.

32 And Joseph’s bones,(AN) which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt,(AO) were buried at Shechem in the tract of land(AP) that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver[b] from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants.

33 And Eleazar son of Aaron(AQ) died and was buried at Gibeah,(AR) which had been allotted to his son Phinehas(AS) in the hill country(AT) of Ephraim.
