Psalm 65

New International Version

Psalm 65^[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.

¹Praise awaits^[b] you, our God, in Zion;^(A)
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.^(B)
²You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.^(C)
³When we were overwhelmed by sins,^(D)
    you forgave^[c] our transgressions.^(E)
⁴Blessed are those you choose^(F)
    and bring near^(G) to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,^(H)
    of your holy temple.

⁵You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,^(I)
    God our Savior,^(J)
the hope of all the ends of the earth^(K)
    and of the farthest seas,^(L)
⁶who formed the mountains^(M) by your power,
    having armed yourself with strength,^(N)
⁷who stilled the roaring of the seas,^(O)
    the roaring of their waves,
    and the turmoil of the nations.^(P)
⁸The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.^(Q)

⁹You care for the land and water it;^(R)
    you enrich it abundantly.^(S)
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,^(T)
    for so you have ordained it.^[d]
¹⁰You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
    you soften it with showers^(U) and bless its crops.
¹¹You crown the year with your bounty,^(V)
    and your carts overflow with abundance.^(W)
¹²The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;^(X)
    the hills are clothed with gladness.^(Y)
¹³The meadows are covered with flocks^(Z)
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;^(AA)
    they shout for joy and sing.^(AB)

1 The word of the Lord that came^(A) to Joel^(B) son of Pethuel.

An Invasion of Locusts

²Hear this,^(C) you elders;^(D)
    listen, all who live in the land.^(E)
Has anything like this ever happened in your days
    or in the days of your ancestors?^(F)
³Tell it to your children,^(G)
    and let your children tell it to their children,
    and their children to the next generation.^(H)
⁴What the locust^(I) swarm has left
    the great locusts have eaten;
what the great locusts have left
    the young locusts have eaten;
what the young locusts have left^(J)
    other locusts^[a] have eaten.^(K)

⁵Wake up, you drunkards, and weep!
    Wail, all you drinkers of wine;^(L)
wail because of the new wine,
    for it has been snatched^(M) from your lips.
⁶A nation has invaded my land,
    a mighty army without number;^(N)
it has the teeth^(O) of a lion,
    the fangs of a lioness.
⁷It has laid waste^(P) my vines
    and ruined my fig trees.^(Q)
It has stripped off their bark
    and thrown it away,
    leaving their branches white.

⁸Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth^(R)
    grieving for the betrothed of her youth.
⁹Grain offerings and drink offerings^(S)
    are cut off from the house of the Lord.
The priests are in mourning,^(T)
    those who minister before the Lord.
¹⁰The fields are ruined,
    the ground is dried up;^(U)
the grain is destroyed,
    the new wine^(V) is dried up,
    the olive oil fails.^(W)

¹¹Despair, you farmers,^(X)
    wail, you vine growers;
grieve for the wheat and the barley,^(Y)
    because the harvest of the field is destroyed.^(Z)
¹²The vine is dried up
    and the fig tree is withered;^(AA)
the pomegranate,^(AB) the palm and the apple^[b] tree—
    all the trees of the field—are dried up.^(AC)
Surely the people’s joy
    is withered away.

A Call to Lamentation

¹³Put on sackcloth,^(AD) you priests, and mourn;
    wail, you who minister^(AE) before the altar.
Come, spend the night in sackcloth,
    you who minister before my God;
for the grain offerings and drink offerings^(AF)
    are withheld from the house of your God.
¹⁴Declare a holy fast;^(AG)
    call a sacred assembly.
Summon the elders
    and all who live in the land^(AH)
to the house of the Lord your God,
    and cry out^(AI) to the Lord.^(AJ)

¹⁵Alas for that^(AK) day!
For the day of the Lord^(AL) is near;
it will come like destruction from the Almighty.^[c]^(AM)

¹⁶Has not the food been cut off^(AN)
    before our very eyes—
joy and gladness^(AO)
    from the house of our God?^(AP)
¹⁷The seeds are shriveled
    beneath the clods.^[d]^(AQ)
The storehouses are in ruins,
    the granaries have been broken down,
    for the grain has dried up.
¹⁸How the cattle moan!
    The herds mill about
because they have no pasture;^(AR)
    even the flocks of sheep are suffering.^(AS)

¹⁹To you, Lord, I call,^(AT)
    for fire^(AU) has devoured the pastures^(AV) in the wilderness
    and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.
²⁰Even the wild animals pant for you;^(AW)
    the streams of water have dried up^(AX)
    and fire has devoured the pastures^(AY) in the wilderness.

3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.^(A) ²People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,^(B) boastful, proud,^(C) abusive,^(D) disobedient to their parents,^(E) ungrateful, unholy, ³without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, ⁴treacherous,^(F) rash, conceited,^(G) lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— ⁵having a form of godliness^(H) but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.^(I)

⁶They are the kind who worm their way^(J) into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, ⁷always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.^(K) ⁸Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses,^(L) so also these teachers oppose^(M) the truth. They are men of depraved minds,^(N) who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. ⁹But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men,^(O) their folly will be clear to everyone.
