Psalm 63

Psalm 63^[a]

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

¹You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,^(A)
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.^(B)

²I have seen you in the sanctuary^(C)
    and beheld your power and your glory.^(D)
³Because your love is better than life,^(E)
    my lips will glorify you.
⁴I will praise you as long as I live,^(F)
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.^(G)
⁵I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;^(H)
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

⁶On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.^(I)
⁷Because you are my help,^(J)
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.^(K)
⁸I cling to you;^(L)
    your right hand upholds me.^(M)

⁹Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;^(N)
they will go down to the depths of the earth.^(O)
¹⁰They will be given over to the sword^(P)
and become food for jackals.^(Q)

¹¹But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God will glory in him,^(R)
while the mouths of liars will be silenced.^(S)

David Anointed King Over Judah

2 In the course of time, David inquired^(A) of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.

The Lord said, “Go up.”

David asked, “Where shall I go?”

“To Hebron,”^(B) the Lord answered.

²So David went up there with his two wives,^(C) Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail,^(D) the widow of Nabal of Carmel. ³David also took the men who were with him,^(E) each with his family, and they settled in Hebron^(F) and its towns. ⁴Then the men of Judah came to Hebron,^(G) and there they anointed^(H) David king over the tribe of Judah.

When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead^(I) who had buried Saul, ⁵he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless^(J) you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him. ⁶May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness,^(K) and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this. ⁷Now then, be strong^(L) and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

²⁵“Though I have been speaking figuratively,^(A) a time is coming^(B) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. ²⁶In that day you will ask in my name.^(C) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. ²⁷No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me^(D) and have believed that I came from God.^(E) ²⁸I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”^(F)

²⁹Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.^(G) ³⁰Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe^(H) that you came from God.”^(I)

³¹“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. ³²“A time is coming^(J) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,^(K) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.^(L) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.^(M)

³³“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.^(N) In this world you will have trouble.^(O) But take heart! I have overcome^(P) the world.”
