Psalm 51:1-10

Psalm 51^[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.^(A)

¹Have mercy^(B) on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;^(C)
according to your great compassion^(D)
    blot out^(E) my transgressions.^(F)
²Wash away^(G) all my iniquity
    and cleanse^(H) me from my sin.

³For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.^(I)
⁴Against you, you only, have I sinned^(J)
    and done what is evil in your sight;^(K)
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.^(L)
⁵Surely I was sinful^(M) at birth,^(N)
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
⁶Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom^(O) in that secret place.^(P)

⁷Cleanse^(Q) me with hyssop,^(R) and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.^(S)
⁸Let me hear joy and gladness;^(T)
    let the bones^(U) you have crushed rejoice.
⁹Hide your face from my sins^(V)
    and blot out^(W) all my iniquity.

¹⁰Create in me a pure heart,^(X) O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.^(Y)

²⁰Then Noah built an altar to the Lord^(A) and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean^(B) birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings^(C) on it. ²¹The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma^(D) and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground^(E) because of humans, even though^[a] every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood.^(F) And never again will I destroy^(G) all living creatures,^(H) as I have done.

²²“As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,^(I)
cold and heat,
summer and winter,^(J)
day and night
will never cease.”^(K)

God’s Covenant With Noah

9 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.^(L) ²The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands.^(M) ³Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you.^(N) Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.^(O)

⁴“But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.^(P) ⁵And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting.^(Q) I will demand an accounting from every animal.^(R) And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.^(S)

⁶“Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans shall their blood be shed;^(T)
for in the image of God^(U)
has God made mankind.

⁷As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”^(V)

¹¹“I am^(A) the good shepherd.^(B) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.^(C) ¹²The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.^(D) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. ¹³The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

¹⁴“I am the good shepherd;^(E) I know my sheep^(F) and my sheep know me— ¹⁵just as the Father knows me and I know the Father^(G)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.^(H) ¹⁶I have other sheep^(I) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock^(J) and one shepherd.^(K) ¹⁷The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life^(L)—only to take it up again. ¹⁸No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.^(M) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”^(N)
