Psalm 50

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

¹The Mighty One, God, the Lord,^(A)
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to where it sets.^(B)
²From Zion,^(C) perfect in beauty,^(D)
    God shines forth.^(E)
³Our God comes^(F)
    and will not be silent;^(G)
a fire devours^(H) before him,^(I)
    and around him a tempest^(J) rages.
⁴He summons the heavens above,
    and the earth,^(K) that he may judge his people:^(L)
⁵“Gather to me this consecrated people,^(M)
    who made a covenant^(N) with me by sacrifice.”
⁶And the heavens proclaim^(O) his righteousness,
    for he is a God of justice.^[a]^[b]^(P)

⁷“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
    I will testify^(Q) against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.^(R)
⁸I bring no charges^(S) against you concerning your sacrifices
    or concerning your burnt offerings,^(T) which are ever before me.
⁹I have no need of a bull^(U) from your stall
    or of goats^(V) from your pens,^(W)
¹⁰for every animal of the forest^(X) is mine,
    and the cattle on a thousand hills.^(Y)
¹¹I know every bird^(Z) in the mountains,
    and the insects in the fields^(AA) are mine.
¹²If I were hungry I would not tell you,
    for the world^(AB) is mine, and all that is in it.^(AC)
¹³Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?

¹⁴“Sacrifice thank offerings^(AD) to God,
fulfill your vows^(AE) to the Most High,^(AF)
¹⁵and call^(AG) on me in the day of trouble;^(AH)
I will deliver^(AI) you, and you will honor^(AJ) me.”

¹⁶But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
    or take my covenant^(AK) on your lips?^(AL)
¹⁷You hate^(AM) my instruction
    and cast my words behind^(AN) you.
¹⁸When you see a thief, you join^(AO) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.^(AP)
¹⁹You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.^(AQ)
²⁰You sit and testify against your brother^(AR)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
²¹When you did these things and I kept silent,^(AS)
    you thought I was exactly^[c] like you.
But I now arraign^(AT) you
    and set my accusations^(AU) before you.

²²“Consider this, you who forget God,^(AV)
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:^(AW)
²³Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
and to the blameless^[d] I will show my salvation.^(AX)”

Amos 5:12-24

New International Version

¹²For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.^(A)

There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes^(B)
and deprive the poor^(C) of justice in the courts.^(D)
¹³Therefore the prudent keep quiet^(E) in such times,
for the times are evil.^(F)

¹⁴Seek good, not evil,
    that you may live.^(G)
Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,
    just as you say he is.
¹⁵Hate evil,^(H) love good;^(I)
    maintain justice in the courts.^(J)
Perhaps^(K) the Lord God Almighty will have mercy^(L)
    on the remnant^(M) of Joseph.

¹⁶Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord God Almighty, says:

“There will be wailing^(N) in all the streets^(O)
    and cries of anguish in every public square.
The farmers^(P) will be summoned to weep
    and the mourners to wail.
¹⁷There will be wailing^(Q) in all the vineyards,
    for I will pass through^(R) your midst,”
says the Lord.^(S)

The Day of the Lord

¹⁸Woe to you who long
    for the day of the Lord!^(T)
Why do you long for the day of the Lord?^(U)
    That day will be darkness,^(V) not light.^(W)
¹⁹It will be as though a man fled from a lion
    only to meet a bear,^(X)
as though he entered his house
    and rested his hand on the wall
    only to have a snake bite him.^(Y)
²⁰Will not the day of the Lord be darkness,^(Z) not light—
    pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?^(AA)

²¹“I hate,^(AB) I despise your religious festivals;^(AC)
    your assemblies^(AD) are a stench to me.
²²Even though you bring me burnt offerings^(AE) and grain offerings,
    I will not accept them.^(AF)
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
    I will have no regard for them.^(AG)
²³Away with the noise of your songs!
    I will not listen to the music of your harps.^(AH)
²⁴But let justice^(AI) roll on like a river,
    righteousness^(AJ) like a never-failing stream!^(AK)

Luke 19:11-27

New International Version

The Parable of the Ten Minas^(A)

¹¹While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God^(B) was going to appear at once.^(C) ¹²He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. ¹³So he called ten of his servants^(D) and gave them ten minas.^[a] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

¹⁴“But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

¹⁵“He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

¹⁶“The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

¹⁷“‘Well done, my good servant!’^(E) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’^(F)

¹⁸“The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

¹⁹“His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

²⁰“Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. ²¹I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’^(G)

²²“His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,^(H) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?^(I) ²³Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

²⁴“Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

²⁵“‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

²⁶“He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.^(J) ²⁷But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
