Psalm 34:1-8

New International Version

Psalm 34^[a]^[b]

Of David. When he pretended to be insane^(A) before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

¹I will extol the Lord at all times;^(B)
    his praise will always be on my lips.
²I will glory^(C) in the Lord;
    let the afflicted hear and rejoice.^(D)
³Glorify the Lord^(E) with me;
    let us exalt^(F) his name together.

⁴I sought the Lord,^(G) and he answered me;
    he delivered^(H) me from all my fears.
⁵Those who look to him are radiant;^(I)
    their faces are never covered with shame.^(J)
⁶This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.^(K)
⁷The angel of the Lord^(L) encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers^(M) them.

⁸Taste and see that the Lord is good;^(N)
blessed is the one who takes refuge^(O) in him.

Nehemiah’s Prayer

1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:

In the month of Kislev^(A) in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,^(B) ²Hanani,^(C) one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant^(D) that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.

³They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.^(E)”

⁴When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.^(F) For some days I mourned and fasted^(G) and prayed before the God of heaven. ⁵Then I said:

“Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God,^(H) who keeps his covenant of love^(I) with those who love him and keep his commandments, ⁶let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear^(J) the prayer^(K) your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess^(L) the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. ⁷We have acted very wickedly^(M) toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

⁸“Remember^(N) the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter^(O) you among the nations, ⁹but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather^(P) them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’^(Q)

¹⁰“They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.^(R) ¹¹Lord, let your ear be attentive^(S) to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor^(T) in the presence of this man.”

I was cupbearer^(U) to the king.

Hebrews 7:11-22

New International Version

Jesus Like Melchizedek

¹¹If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people^(A) established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come,^(B) one in the order of Melchizedek,^(C) not in the order of Aaron? ¹²For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. ¹³He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe,^(D) and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar.^(E) ¹⁴For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah,^(F) and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. ¹⁵And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, ¹⁶one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. ¹⁷For it is declared:

“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”^[a]^(G)

¹⁸The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless^(H) ¹⁹(for the law made nothing perfect),^(I) and a better hope^(J) is introduced, by which we draw near to God.^(K)

²⁰And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, ²¹but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:

“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:^(L)
‘You are a priest forever.’”^[b]^(M)

²²Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.^(N)
