Psalm 33

New International Version

Psalm 33

¹Sing joyfully^(A) to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting^(B) for the upright^(C) to praise him.
²Praise the Lord with the harp;^(D)
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.^(E)
³Sing to him a new song;^(F)
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.^(G)

⁴For the word of the Lord is right^(H) and true;^(I)
he is faithful^(J) in all he does.
⁵The Lord loves righteousness and justice;^(K)
the earth is full of his unfailing love.^(L)

⁶By the word^(M) of the Lord the heavens were made,^(N)
    their starry host^(O) by the breath of his mouth.
⁷He gathers the waters^(P) of the sea into jars^[a];^(Q)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
⁸Let all the earth fear the Lord;^(R)
    let all the people of the world^(S) revere him.^(T)
⁹For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,^(U) and it stood firm.

¹⁰The Lord foils^(V) the plans^(W) of the nations;^(X)
he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
¹¹But the plans of the Lord stand firm^(Y) forever,
the purposes^(Z) of his heart through all generations.

¹²Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,^(AA)
    the people he chose^(AB) for his inheritance.^(AC)
¹³From heaven the Lord looks down^(AD)
    and sees all mankind;^(AE)
¹⁴from his dwelling place^(AF) he watches
    all who live on earth—
¹⁵he who forms^(AG) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.^(AH)

¹⁶No king is saved by the size of his army;^(AI)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
¹⁷A horse^(AJ) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
¹⁸But the eyes^(AK) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,^(AL)
¹⁹to deliver them from death^(AM)
    and keep them alive in famine.^(AN)

²⁰We wait^(AO) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
²¹In him our hearts rejoice,^(AP)
    for we trust in his holy name.^(AQ)
²²May your unfailing love^(AR) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

3 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.^(A) ²He said:

³“May the day of my birth perish,
    and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’^(B)
⁴That day—may it turn to darkness;
    may God above not care about it;
    may no light shine on it.
⁵May gloom and utter darkness^(C) claim it once more;
    may a cloud settle over it;
    may blackness overwhelm it.
⁶That night—may thick darkness^(D) seize it;
    may it not be included among the days of the year
    nor be entered in any of the months.
⁷May that night be barren;
    may no shout of joy^(E) be heard in it.
⁸May those who curse days^[a] curse that day,^(F)
    those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.^(G)
⁹May its morning stars become dark;
    may it wait for daylight in vain
    and not see the first rays of dawn,^(H)
¹⁰for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me
    to hide trouble from my eyes.

¹¹“Why did I not perish at birth,
    and die as I came from the womb?^(I)
¹²Why were there knees to receive me^(J)
    and breasts that I might be nursed?
¹³For now I would be lying down^(K) in peace;
    I would be asleep and at rest^(L)
¹⁴with kings and rulers of the earth,^(M)
    who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,^(N)
¹⁵with princes^(O) who had gold,
    who filled their houses with silver.^(P)
¹⁶Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child,^(Q)
    like an infant who never saw the light of day?^(R)
¹⁷There the wicked cease from turmoil,^(S)
    and there the weary are at rest.^(T)
¹⁸Captives^(U) also enjoy their ease;
    they no longer hear the slave driver’s^(V) shout.^(W)
¹⁹The small and the great are there,^(X)
    and the slaves are freed from their owners.

²⁰“Why is light given to those in misery,
    and life to the bitter of soul,^(Y)
²¹to those who long for death that does not come,^(Z)
    who search for it more than for hidden treasure,^(AA)
²²who are filled with gladness
    and rejoice when they reach the grave?^(AB)
²³Why is life given to a man
    whose way is hidden,^(AC)
    whom God has hedged in?^(AD)
²⁴For sighing^(AE) has become my daily food;^(AF)
    my groans^(AG) pour out like water.^(AH)
²⁵What I feared has come upon me;
    what I dreaded^(AI) has happened to me.^(AJ)
²⁶I have no peace,^(AK) no quietness;
    I have no rest,^(AL) but only turmoil.”^(AM)

¹⁰In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision,^(A) “Ananias!”

“Yes, Lord,” he answered.

¹¹The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus^(B) named Saul, for he is praying. ¹²In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on^(C) him to restore his sight.”

¹³“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people^(D) in Jerusalem.^(E) ¹⁴And he has come here with authority from the chief priests^(F) to arrest all who call on your name.”^(G)

¹⁵But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument^(H) to proclaim my name to the Gentiles^(I) and their kings^(J) and to the people of Israel. ¹⁶I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”^(K)

¹⁷Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on^(L) Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”^(M) ¹⁸Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,^(N) ¹⁹and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

⁴¹At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” ⁴²They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,^(A) whose father and mother we know?^(B) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”^(C)

⁴³“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. ⁴⁴“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,^(D) and I will raise them up at the last day. ⁴⁵It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’^[a]^(E) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. ⁴⁶No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;^(F) only he has seen the Father. ⁴⁷Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.^(G) ⁴⁸I am the bread of life.^(H) ⁴⁹Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.^(I) ⁵⁰But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,^(J) which anyone may eat and not die. ⁵¹I am the living bread^(K) that came down from heaven.^(L) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”^(M)
