¹⁶⁹May my cry come^(A) before you, Lord;
    give me understanding^(B) according to your word.^(C)
¹⁷⁰May my supplication come^(D) before you;
    deliver me^(E) according to your promise.^(F)
¹⁷¹May my lips overflow with praise,^(G)
    for you teach me^(H) your decrees.
¹⁷²May my tongue sing^(I) of your word,
    for all your commands are righteous.^(J)
¹⁷³May your hand be ready to help^(K) me,
    for I have chosen^(L) your precepts.
¹⁷⁴I long for your salvation,^(M) Lord,
    and your law gives me delight.^(N)
¹⁷⁵Let me live^(O) that I may praise you,
    and may your laws sustain me.

1 Kings 13:1-10

The Man of God From Judah

13 By the word of the Lord a man of God^(A) came from Judah to Bethel,^(B) as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. ²By the word of the Lord he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the Lord says: ‘A son named Josiah^(C) will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places^(D) who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’” ³That same day the man of God gave a sign:^(E) “This is the sign the Lord has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.”

⁴When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back. ⁵Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the Lord.

⁶Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede^(F) with the Lord your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before.

⁷The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me for a meal, and I will give you a gift.”^(G)

⁸But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions,^(H) I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread^(I) or drink water here. ⁹For I was commanded by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’” ¹⁰So he took another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.

No One Is Righteous

⁹What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage?^(A) Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.^(B) ¹⁰As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;
¹¹    there is no one who understands;
    there is no one who seeks God.
¹²All have turned away,
    they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    not even one.”^[a]^(C)
¹³“Their throats are open graves;
    their tongues practice deceit.”^[b]^(D)
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”^[c]^(E)
¹⁴    “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”^[d]^(F)
¹⁵“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
¹⁶    ruin and misery mark their ways,
¹⁷and the way of peace they do not know.”^[e]^(G)
¹⁸    “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”^[f]^(H)

¹⁹Now we know that whatever the law says,^(I) it says to those who are under the law,^(J) so that every mouth may be silenced^(K) and the whole world held accountable to God.^(L) ²⁰Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;^(M) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.^(N)
