³⁵ And when they had crucified Him, ^(A)they divided His garments among themselves by casting ^[a]lots. ³⁶ And sitting down, they began to ^(B)keep watch over Him there. ³⁷ And above His head they put up the charge against Him ^[b]which read, “^(C)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

³⁸ At that time two ^[c]rebels *were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. ³⁹ And those passing by were ^[d]speaking abusively to Him, ^(D)shaking their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, “^(E)You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! ^(F)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” ⁴¹ In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, ⁴² “^(G)He saved others; ^[e]He cannot save Himself! ^(H)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. ^43 (I)He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He ^[f]takes pleasure in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ^44 (J)And the ^[g]rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.

²⁴ And they *crucified Him, and *^(A)divided up His garments among themselves, casting ^[a]lots for them to decide ^[b]what each man would take. ²⁵ Now it was the ^[c](B)third hour ^[d]when they crucified Him. ²⁶ The inscription of the charge against Him ^[e]read, “^(C)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

²⁷ And they *crucified two ^[f]rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.^{[g] 29} Those passing by were ^[h]hurling abuse at Him, ^(D)shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to ^(E)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰ save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” ³¹ In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “^(F)He saved others; ^[i]He cannot save Himself! ³² Let this Christ, ^(G)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” ^(H)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

The Crucifixion

^33 (A)And when they came to the place called ^[a]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. ³⁴ [^[b]But Jesus was saying, “^(B)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] ^(C)And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves. ³⁵ And the people stood by, watching. And even the ^(D)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; ^(E)let Him save Himself if this is the ^[c]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” ³⁶ The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, ^(F)offering Him sour wine, ³⁷ and saying, “^(G)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” ³⁸ Now there was also an inscription above Him, “^(H)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

^39 (I)One of the criminals who were hanged there was ^[d]hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the ^[e]Christ? ^(J)Save Yourself and us!” ⁴⁰ But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? ⁴¹ And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving ^[f]what we deserve for our crimes; but this man has done nothing wrong.” ⁴² And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” ⁴³ And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in ^(K)Paradise.”

¹⁸ There they crucified Him, and with Him ^(A)two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. ¹⁹ Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: “^(B)JESUS THE NAZARENE, ^(C)THE KING OF THE JEWS.” ²⁰ Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written ^(D)in ^[a]Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. ²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘^(E)The King of the Jews’; rather, write that He said, ‘I am ^(F)King of the Jews.’” ²² Pilate answered, “^(G)What I have written, I have written.”

²³ Then ^(H)the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made ^(I)four parts: a part to each soldier, and the ^[b]tunic also; but the tunic was seamless, woven ^[c]in one piece. ²⁴ So they said to one another, “^(J)Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be.” ^(K)This happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “They ^(L)divided My garments among themselves, and they cast ^[d]lots for My clothing.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

^25 (M)Now beside the cross of Jesus stood ^(N)His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and ^(O)Mary Magdalene. ²⁶ So when Jesus saw His mother, and ^(P)the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, “^(Q)Woman, behold, your son!” ²⁷ Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into ^(R)his own household.
