³⁵ For whoever wants to save their life^[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.^{(A) 36} What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? ³⁷ Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? ³⁸ If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man^(B) will be ashamed of them^(C) when he comes^(D) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

¹¹ “Blessed are you when people insult you,^(C) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.^{(D) 12} Rejoice and be glad,^(E) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.^(F)

²⁹ And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife^[a] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.^(A)

²³ “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,^(D) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.^(E)

¹⁵ But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument^(A) to proclaim my name to the Gentiles^(B) and their kings^(C) and to the people of Israel. ¹⁶ I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”^(D)

²³ I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

⁸ So do not be ashamed^(A) of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner.^(B) Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel,^(C) by the power of God. ⁹ He has saved^(D) us and called^(E) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done^(F) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, ¹⁰ but it has now been revealed^(G) through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus,^(H) who has destroyed death^(I) and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. ¹¹ And of this gospel^(J) I was appointed^(K) a herald and an apostle and a teacher.^(L)
