¹³ Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them^(A) from their distress.
¹⁴ He brought them out of darkness,^(B) the utter darkness,^(C)
    and broke away their chains.^(D)
15 Let them give thanks^(E) to the Lord for his unfailing love^(F)
    and his wonderful deeds^(G) for mankind,
¹⁶ for he breaks down gates of bronze
    and cuts through bars of iron.

⁷ He upholds^(A) the cause of the oppressed^(B)
    and gives food to the hungry.^(C)
The Lord sets prisoners free,^(D)
8     the Lord gives sight^(E) to the blind,^(F)
the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,^(G)
    the Lord loves the righteous.^(H)

⁶ For to us a child is born,^(A)
    to us a son is given,^(B)
    and the government^(C) will be on his shoulders.^(D)
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor,^(E) Mighty God,^(F)
    Everlasting^(G) Father,^(H) Prince of Peace.^(I)

¹⁶ the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”^[a](A)

¹⁸ “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,^(A)
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news^(B) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
    and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
¹⁹     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”^[a](C)
