⁴⁰ So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,^(A) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,^(B) together with all their kings.^(C) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.^(D)

²⁰ For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts^(A) to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.^(B)

³ I will give you every place where you set your foot,^(A) as I promised Moses.^{(B) 4} Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,^(C) and from the great river, the Euphrates^(D)—all the Hittite^(E) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.^{(F) 5} No one will be able to stand against you^(G) all the days of your life. As I was with^(H) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake^(I) you. ⁶ Be strong^(J) and courageous,^(K) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors^(L) to give them.

²³ So Joshua took the entire land,^(A) just as the Lord had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance^(B) to Israel according to their tribal divisions.^(C) Then the land had rest^(D) from war.^(E)
