Conquests in Northern Canaan

11 When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard of this, he (A)sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, and to the kings who were in the northern hill country, and in the (B)Arabah south of (C)Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and (D)in Naphoth-dor on the (E)west, to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the (F)Jebusites in the hill country, and the (G)Hivites under (H)Hermon in the land of (I)Mizpah. And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number (J)like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

And the Lord said to Joshua, (K)“Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. You shall (L)hamstring their horses and burn their (M)chariots with fire.” So Joshua and all his warriors came (N)suddenly against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them. And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as (O)Great Sidon and (P)Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of (Q)Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining. And Joshua did to them (R)just as the Lord said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua turned back at that time and captured (S)Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they struck with the sword all who were in it, devoting them to destruction;[a] (T)there was none left that breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire. 12 And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, (U)just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 But none of the cities that stood on mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone; that Joshua burned. 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every person they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed. 15 (V)Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, (W)so Moses commanded Joshua, (X)and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

16 So Joshua took all that land, (Y)the hill country and all the Negeb and (Z)all the land of Goshen (AA)and the lowland (AB)and the Arabah (AC)and the hill country of Israel and its lowland 17 (AD)from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as (AE)Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below (AF)Mount Hermon. And he captured (AG)all their kings and struck them and put them to death. 18 Joshua made war (AH)a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the people of Israel except (AI)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took them all in battle. 20 For it was the Lord's doing (AJ)to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, (AK)just as the Lord commanded Moses.

21 And Joshua came at that time and cut off (AL)the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities. 22 There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, (AM)in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, (AN)according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses. (AO)And Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel (AP)according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war.

Kings Defeated by Moses

12 Now these are the kings of the land whom the people of Israel defeated and took possession of their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from (AQ)the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, with all (AR)the Arabah eastward: (AS)Sihon king of the Amorites who lived at Heshbon and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and (AT)from the middle of the valley as far as the (AU)river Jabbok, the boundary of the Ammonites, that is, half of Gilead, and (AV)the Arabah (AW)to the Sea of Chinneroth eastward, and in the direction of Beth-jeshimoth, to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, southward to the foot of (AX)the slopes of Pisgah; and (AY)Og[b] king of Bashan, one of the remnant of (AZ)the Rephaim, (BA)who lived at Ashtaroth and at Edrei and ruled over (BB)Mount Hermon and (BC)Salecah and all Bashan (BD)to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and over half of Gilead to the boundary of Sihon king of Heshbon. (BE)Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the people of Israel defeated them. And Moses the servant of the Lord (BF)gave their land for a possession to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Kings Defeated by Joshua

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the people of Israel defeated on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon to (BG)Mount Halak, that rises toward Seir (and Joshua gave their land to the tribes of Israel as a possession (BH)according to their allotments, (BI)in the hill country, in the lowland, in the Arabah, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the Negeb, the land of (BJ)the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites): (BK)the king of Jericho, one; (BL)the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; 10 (BM)the king of Jerusalem, one; (BN)the king of Hebron, one; 11 (BO)the king of Jarmuth, one; (BP)the king of Lachish, one; 12 (BQ)the king of Eglon, one; (BR)the king of Gezer, one; 13 (BS)the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; 14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; 15 (BT)the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; 16 (BU)the king of Makkedah, one; (BV)the king of Bethel, one; 17 the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one; 18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one; 19 (BW)the king of Madon, one; (BX)the king of Hazor, one; 20 (BY)the king of Shimron-meron, one; (BZ)the king of Achshaph, one; 21 (CA)the king of Taanach, one; (CB)the king of Megiddo, one; 22 the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one; 23 (CC)the king of Dor in (CD)Naphath-dor, one; the king of Goiim in Galilee,[c] one; 24 the king of Tirzah, one: in all, thirty-one kings.

Land Still to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua (CE)was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land (CF)to possess. (CG)This is the land that yet remains: all the (CH)regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites (from the (CI)Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; (CJ)there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of (CK)the Avvim, in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of (CL)the Amorites, and the land of the (CM)Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from (CN)Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to (CO)Lebo-hamath, all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to (CP)Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive (CQ)them out from before the people of Israel. Only (CR)allot the land to Israel (CS)for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore (CT)divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh[d] the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (CU)which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: (CV)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and (CW)all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (CX)and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11 and Gilead, and the (CY)region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and (CZ)all Bashan to Salecah; 12 (DA)all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of (DB)the remnant of the Rephaim); (DC)these Moses had struck and driven out. 13 (DD)Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

14 (DE)To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, (DF)which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by (DG)Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; (DH)Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 (DI)and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and (DJ)Kiriathaim, and (DK)Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and (DL)Beth-peor, and (DM)the slopes of Pisgah, and (DN)Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, (DO)all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (DP)whom Moses defeated with (DQ)the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 (DR)Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages.

24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 (DS)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of (DT)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from (DU)Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,[e] 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, (DV)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of (DW)Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28 This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.

29 And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30 Their region extended from (DX)Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all (DY)the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half Gilead, and (DZ)Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of (EA)Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed (EB)in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 (EC)But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, (ED)just as he said to them.

The Inheritance West of the Jordan

14 These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which (EE)Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. Their inheritance was (EF)by lot, just as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. (EG)For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, (EH)but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. For (EI)the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. The people of Israel did (EJ)as the Lord commanded Moses; they allotted the land.

Caleb's Request and Inheritance

Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (EK)Kenizzite said to him, “You know (EL)what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord (EM)sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. But (EN)my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God. And Moses swore on that day, saying, (EO)‘Surely the land (EP)on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, (EQ)just as he said, these (ER)forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day (ES)eighty-five years old. 11 (ET)I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and (EU)for going and coming. 12 So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the (EV)Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”

13 Then Joshua (EW)blessed him, and he gave (EX)Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. 14 Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, (EY)because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 (EZ)Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba.[f] (Arba[g] was the greatest man among the Anakim.) (FA)And the land had rest from war.

The Allotment for Judah

15 The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward (FB)to the boundary of Edom, to (FC)the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. And their south boundary ran from the end of the (FD)Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. It goes out southward of (FE)the ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, passes along to Azmon, goes out by (FF)the Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. And the east boundary is the (FG)Salt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary goes up to (FH)Beth-hoglah and passes along north of (FI)Beth-arabah. And the boundary goes up to (FJ)the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. And the boundary goes up to Debir from (FK)the Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite (FL)the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. And the boundary passes along to the waters of (FM)En-shemesh and ends at (FN)En-rogel. Then the boundary goes up by (FO)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite ((FP)that is, Jerusalem). And the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the Valley (FQ)of Rephaim.
