Healing the Man Born Blind
9 As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, “(A)Rabbi, who sinned, (B)this man or his (C)parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was (D)so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me (E)as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am (F)the Light of the world.” 6 When He had said this, He (G)spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in (H)the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he left and (I)washed, and (J)came back seeing. 8 So the neighbors, and those who previously saw [a]him as a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one who used to (K)sit and beg?” 9 Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” [b]The man himself kept saying, “I am the one.” 10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to (L)Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” 12 And they said to him, “Where is He?” He *said, “I do not know.”
Controversy over the Man
13 They *brought [c]the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees. 14 (M)Now it was a Sabbath on the day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 (N)Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He (O)does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such [d](P)signs?” And (Q)there was dissension among them. 17 So they *said (R)again to the man who was blind, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a (S)prophet.”
18 (T)The Jews then did not believe it about him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, 19 and they questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20 His parents then answered and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they (U)were afraid of the [e]Jews; for the Jews (V)had already reached the decision that if anyone confessed Him to be [f]Christ, (W)he was to be excommunicated from the synagogue. 23 It was for this reason that his parents said, “(X)He is of age; ask him.”
24 So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind, and said to him, “(Y)Give glory to God; we know that (Z)this man is a sinner.” 25 He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “(AA)I told you already and you did not (AB)listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?” 28 They spoke abusively to him and said, “You are His disciple, but (AC)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (AD)we do not know where He is from.” 30 The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes! 31 We know that (AE)God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is [g]God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him. 32 [h]Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 (AF)If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “(AG)You were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?” So they [i](AH)put him out.
Jesus Affirms His Deity
35 Jesus heard that they had [j](AI)put him out, and upon finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the (AJ)Son of Man?” 36 He answered [k]by saying, “And (AK)who is He, [l]Sir, that I may believe in Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and (AL)He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And he (AM)worshiped Him. 39 And Jesus said, “(AN)For judgment I came into this world, so that (AO)those who do not see may see, and (AP)those who see may become blind.” 40 Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him, “(AQ)We are not blind too, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, “(AR)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you maintain, ‘(AS)We see,’ your sin remains.
Parable of the Good Shepherd
10 “Truly, truly I say to you, the one who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is (AT)a thief and a robber. 2 But the one who enters by the door is (AU)a shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep listen to (AV)his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and (AW)leads them out. 4 When he puts all his own sheep outside, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know (AX)his voice. 5 However, a stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know (AY)the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus told them this (AZ)figure of speech, but they did not understand what the things which He was saying to them [m]meant.
7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly I say to you, I am (BA)the door of the sheep. 8 All those who came before Me are (BB)thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 (BC)I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they (BD)would have life, and [n]have it abundantly.
11 “(BE)I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd (BF)lays down His life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand, and not a (BG)shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep. 14 (BH)I am the good shepherd, and (BI)I know My own, and My own know Me, 15 just as (BJ)the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and (BK)I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And I have (BL)other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become (BM)one flock, with (BN)one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I (BO)lay down My life so that I may take it back. 18 (BP)No one has taken it away from Me, but I (BQ)lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. (BR)This commandment I received from My Father.”
19 (BS)Dissension occurred again among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He (BT)has a demon and (BU)is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the words of one who is (BV)demon-possessed. (BW)A demon cannot open the eyes of those who are blind, can it?”
Jesus Asserts His Deity
22 At that time the [o]Feast of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area, in the portico of (BX)Solomon. 24 (BY)The Jews then surrounded Him and began saying to Him, “How long [p]will You keep us in suspense? If You are the [q]Christ, tell us (BZ)plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “(CA)I told you, and you do not believe; (CB)the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because (CC)you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep (CD)listen to My voice, and (CE)I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give them (CF)eternal life, and they will never perish; and (CG)no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 [r]My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 (CH)I and the Father are [s]one.”
31 The Jews (CI)picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus replied to them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “We are not stoning You for a good work, but for (CJ)blasphemy; and because You, being a man, (CK)make Yourself out to be God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in (CL)your (CM)Law: ‘(CN)I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be nullified), 36 are you saying of Him whom the Father (CO)sanctified and (CP)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘(CQ)I am the Son of God’? 37 (CR)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe (CS)the works, so that you may [t]know and understand that (CT)the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39 Therefore (CU)they were seeking again to arrest Him, and (CV)He eluded their grasp.
40 And He went away (CW)again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He stayed there. 41 Many came to Him and were saying, “While John performed no (CX)sign, yet (CY)everything John said about this man was true.” 42 And (CZ)many believed in Him there.
The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus
11 Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of (DA)Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister (DB)Martha. 2 And it was the Mary who (DC)anointed (DD)the Lord with [u]ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “(DE)Lord, behold, (DF)he whom You love is sick.” 4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not [v]meant for death, but is for (DG)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” 5 (Now Jesus loved (DH)Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.) 6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. 7 Then after this He *said to the disciples, “(DI)Let’s go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples *said to Him, “(DJ)Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking (DK)to stone You, and yet You are going there again?” 9 Jesus replied, “(DL)Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in [w]him.” 11 This He said, and after this He *said to them, “Our (DM)friend Lazarus (DN)has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.” 12 The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will [x]come out of it.” 13 Now (DO)Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about [y]actual sleep. 14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus died, 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let’s go to him.” 16 (DP)Therefore Thomas, who was called [z](DQ)Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, so that we may die with Him!”
17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb (DR)four days. 18 Now (DS)Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [aa]fifteen stadia away; 19 and many of (DT)the Jews had come to (DU)Martha and Mary, (DV)to console them about their brother. 20 So then (DW)Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but (DX)Mary [ab]stayed in the house. 21 Martha then said to Jesus, “(DY)Lord, (DZ)if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Even now I know that (EA)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 23 Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise from the dead.” 24 Martha *said to Him, “(EB)I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “(EC)I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me (ED)will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are (EE)the [ac]Christ, the Son of God, and [ad](EF)He who comes into the world.”
28 When she had said this, she (EG)left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “(EH)The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard this, she *got up quickly and came to Him.
30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but (EI)was still at the place where Martha met Him. 31 (EJ)Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were (EK)consoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “(EL)Lord, (EM)if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and (EN)the Jews who came with her also weeping, He (EO)was deeply moved in spirit and [ae](EP)was troubled, 34 and He said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus (EQ)wept. 36 So (ER)the Jews were saying, “See how He (ES)loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could this man, who (ET)opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also [af]kept this man from dying?”
38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a (EU)cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time [ag]there will be a stench, for he has been dead (EV)four days.” 40 Jesus *said to her, “(EW)Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the (EX)stone. And Jesus (EY)raised His eyes, and said, “(EZ)Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, (FA)because of the [ah]people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that (FB)You sent Me.” 43 And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 Out came the man who had died, (FC)bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (FD)his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
45 (FE)Therefore many of the Jews (FF)who came to Mary, and (FG)saw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the (FH)Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
47 Therefore (FI)the chief priests and the Pharisees (FJ)convened a (FK)council meeting, and they were saying, “What are we [ai]doing in regard to the fact that this man is performing many [aj](FL)signs? 48 If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our [ak](FM)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (FN)Caiaphas, (FO)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor are you taking into account that (FP)it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.” 51 Now he did not say this [al]on his own, but (FQ)as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (FR)gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (FS)planned together to kill Him.
54 Therefore Jesus (FT)no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, into a city called (FU)Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
55 Now (FV)the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country prior to the Passover, (FW)in order to [am]purify themselves. 56 So they (FX)were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now (FY)the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.
Mary Anoints Jesus
12 (FZ)Therefore, six days before (GA)the Passover, Jesus came to (GB)Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a dinner there, and (GC)Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 3 (GD)Mary then took a [an]pound of very expensive (GE)perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But (GF)Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one who intended to [ao]betray Him, *said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred [ap]denarii and the proceeds given to poor people?” 6 Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he (GG)kept the money box, he used to [aq]steal from (GH)what was put into it. 7 Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it [ar]for (GI)the day of My burial. 8 (GJ)For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”
9 The (GK)large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not on account of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, (GL)whom He raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because (GM)on account of him (GN)many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.
The Triumphal Entry
12 On the next day, when (GO)the large crowd that had come to (GP)the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, “(GQ)Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the (GR)King of Israel!” 14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 “(GS)Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” 16 (GT)These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus (GU)was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him. 17 So (GV)the [as]people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. 18 (GW)For this reason also the [at]people went to meet Him, (GX)because they heard that He had performed this [au]sign. 19 So the Pharisees said [av]to one another, “You see that you are not accomplishing anything; look, the world has gone after Him!”
Greeks Seek Jesus
20 Now there were some (GY)Greeks among those who were going up to worship at (GZ)the feast; 21 these people then came to (HA)Philip, who was from (HB)Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip *came and *told (HC)Andrew; then Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. 23 But Jesus *answered them by saying, “(HD)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (HE)be glorified. 24 Truly, truly I say to you, (HF)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (HG)The one who loves his [aw]life loses it, and the one who (HH)hates his [ax]life in this world will keep it [ay]to eternal life. 26 If anyone [az]serves Me, he must follow Me; and (HI)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [ba]serves Me, the Father will (HJ)honor him.
Jesus Foretells His Death
27 “(HK)Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? ‘(HL)Father, save Me from (HM)this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 (HN)Father, glorify Your name.” Then a (HO)voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “(HP)An angel has spoken to Him!” 30 Jesus responded and said, “(HQ)This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours. 31 (HR)Now judgment is upon this world; now (HS)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I (HT)am lifted up from the earth, will (HU)draw all people to Myself.” 33 Now He was saying this (HV)to indicate what kind of death He was going to die. 34 The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from (HW)the Law that (HX)the [bb]Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The (HY)Son of Man must be (HZ)lifted up’? Who is this (IA)Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, “(IB)For a little while longer (IC)the Light is among you. (ID)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who (IE)walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the Light, (IF)believe in the Light, so that you may become (IG)sons of Light.”
These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and (IH)hid Himself from them. 37 But though He had performed so many [bc]signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him. 38 This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: “(II)Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 “(IJ)He has blinded their eyes and He (IK)hardened their heart, so that they will not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and [bd]be converted, and so I will not heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said because (IL)he saw His glory, and (IM)he spoke about Him. 42 Nevertheless (IN)many, even of (IO)the rulers, believed in Him, but (IP)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be (IQ)excommunicated from the synagogue; 43 (IR)for they loved the [be]approval of people rather than the [bf]approval of God.
44 Now Jesus cried out and said, “(IS)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me. 45 And (IT)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (IU)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My [bg]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for (IV)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 (IW)The one who rejects Me and does not [bh]accept My [bi]teachings has one who judges him: (IX)the word which I spoke. That will judge him on (IY)the last day. 49 (IZ)For I did not speak [bj]on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me (JA)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that (JB)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak (JC)just as the Father has told Me.”

A Man Born Blind Receives Sight
9 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, (A)who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, (B)but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 (C)I[a] must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is (D)day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, (E)I am the light of the world.”
6 When He had said these things, (F)He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash (G)in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So (H)he went and washed, and came back seeing.

10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
11 He answered and said, (I)“A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to [d]the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.”
12 Then they said to him, “Where is He?”
He said, “I do not know.”
The Pharisees Excommunicate the Healed Man
13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not [e]keep the Sabbath.”
Others said, (J)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (K)there was a division among them.
17 They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?”
He said, (L)“He is a prophet.”
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said these things because (M)they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he (N)would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, (O)“Give God the glory! (P)We know that this Man is a sinner.”
25 He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”
26 Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
27 He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”
28 Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God (Q)spoke to (R)Moses; as for this fellow, (S)we do not know where He is from.”
30 The man answered and said to them, (T)“Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! 31 Now we know that (U)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. 33 (V)If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
34 They answered and said to him, (W)“You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they [f]cast him out.
True Vision and True Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had (X)found him, He said to him, “Do you (Y)believe in (Z)the Son of [g]God?”
36 He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”
37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and (AA)it is He who is talking with you.”
38 Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he (AB)worshiped Him.
39 And Jesus said, (AC)“For judgment I have come into this world, (AD)that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”
40 Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, (AE)and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”
41 Jesus said to them, (AF)“If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.
Jesus the True Shepherd
10 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by (AG)name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a (AH)stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.
Jesus the Good Shepherd
7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came [h]before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 (AI)I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
11 (AJ)“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a [i]hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (AK)leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and (AL)I know My sheep, and (AM)am known by My own. 15 (AN)As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; (AO)and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And (AP)other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; (AQ)and there will be one flock and one shepherd.
17 “Therefore My Father (AR)loves Me, (AS)because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I (AT)have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. (AU)This command I have received from My Father.”
19 Therefore (AV)there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, (AW)“He has a demon and is [j]mad. Why do you listen to Him?”
21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. (AX)Can a demon (AY)open the eyes of the blind?”
The Shepherd Knows His Sheep
22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, (AZ)in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in [k]doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (BA)The works that I do in My Father’s name, they (BB)bear witness of Me. 26 But (BC)you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, [l]as I said to you. 27 (BD)My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 (BE)My Father, (BF)who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 (BG)I and My Father are one.”
Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus
31 Then (BH)the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”
33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (BI)blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, (BJ)make Yourself God.”
34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, (BK)‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, (BL)to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture (BM)cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him (BN)whom the Father sanctified and (BO)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ (BP)because I said, ‘I am (BQ)the Son of God’? 37 (BR)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, (BS)believe the works, that you may know and [m]believe (BT)that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 (BU)Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.
The Believers Beyond Jordan
40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place (BV)where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, (BW)but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.
The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of (BX)Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (BY)It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
4 When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when He heard that he was sick, (BZ)He stayed two more days in the place where He was. 7 Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
8 The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to (CA)stone You, and are You going there again?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? (CB)If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the (CC)light of this world. 10 But (CD)if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus (CE)sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”
12 Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” 13 However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.
14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”
16 Then (CF)Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
I Am the Resurrection and the Life
17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [n]two miles away. 19 And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 21 Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that (CG)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha said to Him, (CH)“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am (CI)the resurrection and the life. (CJ)He who believes in Me, though he may (CK)die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, (CL)I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
Jesus and Death, the Last Enemy
28 And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.” 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but [o]was in the place where Martha met Him. 31 (CM)Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, [p]saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32 Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she (CN)fell down at His feet, saying to Him, (CO)“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?”
They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 (CP)Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
37 And some of them said, “Could not this Man, (CQ)who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”
Lazarus Raised from the Dead
38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a (CR)stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”
Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would (CS)see the glory of God?” 41 Then they took away the stone [q]from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but (CT)because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” 44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with (CU)graveclothes, and (CV)his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus(CW)
45 Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, (CX)and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and (CY)told them the things Jesus did. 47 (CZ)Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, (DA)“What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. 48 If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”
49 And one of them, (DB)Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 (DC)nor do you consider that it is expedient for [r]us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and (DD)not for that nation only, but (DE)also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
53 Then, from that day on, they plotted to (DF)put Him to death. 54 (DG)Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called (DH)Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.
55 (DI)And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to (DJ)purify themselves. 56 (DK)Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?” 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might (DL)seize Him.
The Anointing at Bethany(DM)
12 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, (DN)where Lazarus was [s]who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. 2 (DO)There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3 Then (DP)Mary took a pound of very costly oil of (DQ)spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
4 But one of His disciples, (DR)Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for [t]three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and (DS)had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
7 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; [u]she has kept this for the day of My burial. 8 For (DT)the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, (DU)whom He had raised from the dead. 10 (DV)But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 (DW)because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
The Triumphal Entry(DX)
12 (DY)The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
“Hosanna!
(DZ)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”
14 (EA)Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
15 “Fear(EB) not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
16 (EC)His disciples did not understand these things at first; (ED)but when Jesus was glorified, (EE)then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 (EF)For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, (EG)“You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
The Fruitful Grain of Wheat
20 Now there (EH)were certain Greeks among those (EI)who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, (EJ)who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
23 But Jesus answered them, saying, (EK)“The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, (EL)unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much [v]grain. 25 (EM)He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him (EN)follow Me; and (EO)where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
Jesus Predicts His Death on the Cross
27 (EP)“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? (EQ)But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”
(ER)Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
30 Jesus answered and said, (ES)“This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now (ET)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, (EU)if I am [w]lifted up from the earth, will draw (EV)all peoples to Myself.” 33 (EW)This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
34 The people answered Him, (EX)“We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer (EY)the light is with you. (EZ)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; (FA)he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (FB)sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and (FC)was hidden from them.
Who Has Believed Our Report?
37 But although He had done so many (FD)signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:
(FE)“Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
40 “He(FF) has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
(FG)Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”
41 (FH)These things Isaiah said [x]when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
Walk in the Light
42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but (FI)because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 (FJ)for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
44 Then Jesus cried out and said, (FK)“He who believes in Me, (FL)believes not in Me (FM)but in Him who sent Me. 45 And (FN)he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (FO)I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not [y]believe, (FP)I do not judge him; for (FQ)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 (FR)He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—(FS)the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For (FT)I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, (FU)what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Dead Idols and the Living God
46 Bel (A)bows down, Nebo stoops;
Their idols were on the beasts and on the cattle.
Your carriages were heavily loaded,
(B)A burden to the weary beast.
2 They stoop, they bow down together;
They could not deliver the burden,
(C)But have themselves gone into captivity.
3 “Listen to Me, O house of Jacob,
And all the remnant of the house of Israel,
(D)Who have been upheld by Me from [a]birth,
Who have been carried from the womb:
4 Even to your old age, (E)I am He,
And even to gray hairs (F)I will carry you!
I have made, and I will bear;
Even I will carry, and will deliver you.
5 “To(G) whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal
And compare Me, that we should be alike?
6 (H)They lavish gold out of the bag,
And weigh silver on the scales;
They hire a (I)goldsmith, and he makes it a god;
They prostrate themselves, yes, they worship.
7 (J)They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it
And set it in its place, and it stands;
From its place it shall not move.
Though (K)one cries out to it, yet it cannot answer
Nor save him out of his trouble.
8 “Remember this, and [b]show yourselves men;
(L)Recall to mind, O you transgressors.
9 (M)Remember the former things of old,
For I am God, and (N)there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like Me,
10 (O)Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things that are not yet done,
Saying, (P)‘My counsel shall stand,
And I will do all My pleasure,’
11 Calling a bird of prey (Q)from the east,
The man (R)who executes My counsel, from a far country.
Indeed (S)I have spoken it;
I will also bring it to pass.
I have purposed it;
I will also do it.
12 “Listen to Me, you (T)stubborn-hearted,
(U)Who are far from righteousness:
13 (V)I bring My righteousness near, it shall not be far off;
My salvation (W)shall not [c]linger.
And I will place (X)salvation in Zion,
For Israel My glory.
The Humiliation of Babylon
47 “Come (Y)down and (Z)sit in the dust,
O virgin daughter of (AA)Babylon;
Sit on the ground without a throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For you shall no more be called
Tender and [d]delicate.
2 (AB)Take the millstones and grind meal.
Remove your veil,
Take off the skirt,
Uncover the thigh,
Pass through the rivers.
3 (AC)Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
Yes, your shame will be seen;
(AD)I will take vengeance,
And I will not arbitrate with a man.”
4 As for (AE)our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His name,
The Holy One of Israel.
5 “Sit in (AF)silence, and go into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans;
(AG)For you shall no longer be called
The Lady of Kingdoms.
6 (AH)I was angry with My people;
(AI)I have profaned My inheritance,
And given them into your hand.
You showed them no mercy;
(AJ)On the elderly you laid your yoke very heavily.
7 And you said, ‘I shall be (AK)a lady forever,’
So that you did not (AL)take these things to heart,
(AM)Nor remember the latter end of them.
8 “Therefore hear this now, you who are given to pleasures,
Who dwell securely,
Who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me;
I shall not sit as a widow,
Nor shall I know the loss of children’;
9 But these two things shall come to you
(AN)In a moment, in one day:
The loss of children, and widowhood.
They shall come upon you in their fullness
Because of the multitude of your sorceries,
For the great abundance of your enchantments.
10 “For you have trusted in your wickedness;
You have said, ‘No one (AO)sees me’;
Your wisdom and your knowledge have [e]warped you;
And you have said in your heart,
‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’
11 Therefore evil shall come upon you;
You shall not know from where it arises.
And trouble shall fall upon you;
You will not be able [f]to put it off.
And (AP)desolation shall come upon you (AQ)suddenly,
Which you shall not know.
12 “Stand now with your enchantments
And the multitude of your sorceries,
In which you have labored from your youth—
Perhaps you will be able to profit,
Perhaps you will prevail.
13 (AR)You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels;
Let now (AS)the[g] astrologers, the stargazers,
And [h]the monthly prognosticators
Stand up and save you
From what shall come upon you.
14 Behold, they shall be (AT)as stubble,
The fire shall (AU)burn them;
They shall not deliver themselves
From the power of the flame;
It shall not be a coal to be warmed by,
Nor a fire to sit before!
15 Thus shall they be to you
With whom you have labored,
(AV)Your merchants from your youth;
They shall wander each one to his [i]quarter.
No one shall save you.
