The Healing at Bethesda

After these things there was (A)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now in Jerusalem, by (B)the Sheep Gate, there is a pool which (C)in [a]Hebrew is called [b]Bethesda, having five [c]porticoes. In these porticoes lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, limping, or [d]paralyzed.[e] Now a man was there who had been [f]ill for thirty-eight years. Jesus, upon seeing this man lying there and knowing that he had already been in that condition for a long time, *said to him, “Do you want to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus *said to him, (D)Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.

(E)Now it was a Sabbath on that day. 10 So (F)the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is a Sabbath, and (G)it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’ 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk’?” 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14 Afterward, Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not (H)sin anymore, (I)so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and informed (J)the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason (K)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father [g]is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

Jesus’ Equality with God

18 For this reason therefore (L)the Jews (M)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (N)making Himself equal with God.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (O)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [h]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way. 20 (P)For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (Q)greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (R)gives them life, so (S)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (T)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (U)The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and (V)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (W)does not come into judgment, but has (X)passed out of death into life.

Two Resurrections

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, [i](Y)a time is coming and [j]even now has arrived, when (Z)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (AA)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He (AB)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (AC)execute judgment, because He is [k]the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this; for [l](AD)a time is coming when (AE)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come out: (AF)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

30 (AG)I can do nothing [m]on My own. As I hear, I judge; and (AH)My judgment is [n]righteous, because I do not seek My own will but (AI)the will of Him who sent Me.

31 (AJ)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [o]true. 32 There is (AK)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Testimony of John the Baptist

33 You have sent messengers to John, and he (AL)has testified to the truth. 34 But (AM)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (AN)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you (AO)were willing to rejoice for [p]a while in his light.

Testimony of Works

36 But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (AP)the works which the Father has given Me (AQ)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (AR)has sent Me.

Testimony of the Father

37 And the Father who sent Me, (AS)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 Also you do not have (AT)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He (AU)sent.

Testimony of the Scripture

39 [q](AV)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is (AW)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; 40 and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (AX)I do not receive glory from people; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not [r]receive Me; (AY)if another comes in his own name, you will [s]receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you [t](AZ)accept [u]glory from one another and you do not seek (BA)the [v]glory that is from (BB)the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (BC)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for (BD)he wrote about Me. 47 But (BE)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Five Thousand Men Fed

After these things (BF)Jesus went away to the other side of (BG)the Sea of Galilee (or (BH)Tiberias). A large crowd was following Him, because they were watching the [w](BI)signs which He was performing on those who were sick. But (BJ)Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now (BK)the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. So Jesus, after raising His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to (BL)Philip, “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?” But He was saying this only to (BM)test him, for He Himself knew what He intended to do. (BN)Philip answered Him, “(BO)Two hundred [x]denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little!” One of His (BP)disciples, (BQ)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two (BR)fish; but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline to eat.” Now there was (BS)plenty of grass in the place. So the men reclined, about [y](BT)five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and (BU)after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also of the (BV)fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, He *said to His (BW)disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve (BX)baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the [z]sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the (BY)Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Water

15 So Jesus, aware that they [aa]intended to come and take Him by force (BZ)to make Him king, (CA)withdrew again to (CB)the mountain by Himself, alone.

16 Now when evening came, His (CC)disciples went down to the sea, 17 and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea (CD)to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 In addition, the sea began getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then, when they had rowed about [ab]twenty-five or thirty stadia, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat; and they were frightened. 20 But He *said to them, “It is I; [ac](CE)do not be afraid.” 21 So they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

22 The next day (CF)the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there except one, and that Jesus (CG)had not gotten into the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had departed alone. 23 Other small boats came from (CH)Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the (CI)Lord (CJ)had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats and (CK)came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “(CL)Rabbi, when did You get here?”

Words to the People

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you (CM)seek Me, not because you saw [ad](CN)signs, but because you ate some of the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not (CO)work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for (CP)eternal life, which (CQ)the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, (CR)has set His [ae]seal.” 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is (CS)the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He (CT)has sent.” 30 So they said to Him, “(CU)What then are You doing as a (CV)sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work are You performing? 31 (CW)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘(CX)He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 For the bread of God is [af]that which (CY)comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always (CZ)give us this bread.”

35 Jesus said to them, (DA)I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me (DB)will never be thirsty. 36 But (DC)I said to you that you have indeed seen Me, and yet you do not believe. 37 (DD)Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out. 38 For (DE)I have come down from heaven, (DF)not to do My own will, but (DG)the will of Him who (DH)sent Me. 39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of (DI)everything that He has given Me I will (DJ)lose nothing, but will (DK)raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who (DL)sees the Son and (DM)believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will (DN)raise him up on the last day.”

Words to the Jews

41 (DO)So then the Jews were complaining about Him because He said, “I am the bread that (DP)came down out of heaven.” 42 And they were saying, “(DQ)Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (DR)we know? How does He now say, (DS)I have come down out of heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop complaining among yourselves. 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (DT)draws him; and I will (DU)raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written (DV)in the Prophets: ‘(DW)And they shall all be (DX)taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46 (DY)Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes (DZ)has eternal life. 48 (EA)I am the bread of life. 49 (EB)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that (EC)comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and (ED)not die. 51 (EE)I am the living bread that (EF)came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, (EG)he will live forever; and the bread which I will give (EH)for the life of the world also is (EI)My flesh.”

52 (EJ)Then the Jews (EK)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (EL)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (EM)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (EN)remains in Me, and I in him. 57 Just as the (EO)living Father (EP)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread that (EQ)came down out of heaven, not as (ER)the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread (ES)will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

59 These things He said (ET)in the synagogue as He taught (EU)in Capernaum.

60 So then many of His (EV)disciples, when they heard this, said, “(EW)This statement is very [ag]unpleasant; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (EX)aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, “Is this [ah](EY)offensive to you? 62 What then if you see (EZ)the Son of Man (FA)ascending to where He was before? 63 (FB)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; (FC)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life. 64 But there are (FD)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus (FE)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and (FF)who it was who would [ai]betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have (FG)told you that no one can come to Me unless (FH)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

66 As a result of this many of His (FI)disciples (FJ)left, and would no longer walk with Him. 67 So Jesus said to (FK)the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?” 68 (FL)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (FM)words of eternal life. 69 And we have already believed and have come to know that You are (FN)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (FO)Did I Myself not choose you, (FP)the twelve? And yet one of you is (FQ)a devil.” 71 Now He meant Judas (FR)the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, (FS)one of (FT)the twelve, [aj]was going to betray Him.

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

After these things Jesus (FU)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because (FV)the Jews (FW)were seeking to kill Him. Now the feast of the Jews, (FX)the Feast of Booths, was near. So His (FY)brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your (FZ)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. For no one does anything in secret [ak]when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” For not even His (GA)brothers believed in Him. So Jesus *said to them, (GB)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. (GC)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that (GD)its deeds are evil. Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because (GE)My time has not yet fully arrived.” Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

10 But when His (GF)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. 11 (GG)So the Jews (GH)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” 12 And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: (GI)some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.” 13 However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for (GJ)fear of [al]the Jews.

14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple area, and began to (GK)teach. 15 (GL)The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man (GM)become learned, not having been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, (GN)My teaching is not My own, but His who sent Me. 17 (GO)If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God, or I am speaking from Myself. 18 The one who speaks from himself (GP)seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19 (GQ)Did Moses not give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why are you (GR)seeking to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “(GS)You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did (GT)one [am]deed, and you all are astonished. 22 For this reason (GU)Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from (GV)the fathers), and even on a Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 (GW)If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry at Me because I made an entire man well on a Sabbath? 24 Do not (GX)judge by the outward appearance, but judge [an]with righteous judgment.”

25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this man not the one whom they are seeking to kill? 26 And yet look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. (GY)The rulers do not really know that this is the [ao]Christ, do they? 27 However, (GZ)we know where this man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, (HA)teaching and saying, (HB)You both know Me and you know where I am from; and (HC)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 (HD)I do know Him, because (HE)I am from Him, and (HF)He sent Me.” 30 So they (HG)were seeking to arrest Him; and yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His (HH)hour had not yet come. 31 But (HI)many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “(HJ)When the [ap]Christ comes, He will not perform more [aq](HK)signs than those which this man has done, will He?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (HL)officers to (HM)arrest Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, (HN)For a little while longer I am going to be with you, and then (HO)I am going to Him who sent Me. 34 (HP)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 (HQ)The Jews then said to one another, “(HR)Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He does not intend to go to (HS)the Dispersion among (HT)the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, does He? 36 What is this statement that He said, (HU)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on (HV)the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (HW)If anyone is thirsty, [ar]let him come to Me and drink. 38 The one who believes in Me, (HX)as the Scripture said, ‘[as]From his innermost being will flow rivers of (HY)living water.’” 39 But this He said (HZ)in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for (IA)the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (IB)glorified.

People’s Division over Jesus

40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (IC)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [at]Christ.” But others were saying, “(ID)Surely the [au]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (IE)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (IF)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (IG)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The (IH)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (II)officers answered, “(IJ)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(IK)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (IL)Not one of (IM)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (IN)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 (IO)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(IP)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 [[[av]And everyone went to his home.

The Adulterous Woman

But Jesus went to (IQ)the Mount of Olives. And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and (IR)He sat down and began teaching them. Now the scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard, they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the Law, (IS)Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” Now they were saying this to (IT)test Him, (IU)so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. When they persisted in asking Him, (IV)He straightened up and said to them, (IW)He who is without sin among you, let him be the (IX)first to throw a stone at her.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Now when they heard this, they began leaving, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard. 10 And (IY)straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, [aw]Lord.” And Jesus said, (IZ)I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on do not (JA)sin any longer.”]]

Jesus Is the Light of the World

12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, (JB)I am the Light of the world; (JC)the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “(JD)You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not [ax]true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, (JE)Even if I am testifying about Myself, My testimony is [ay]true, because I know (JF)where I came from and where I am going; but (JG)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 (JH)You judge [az]according to the flesh; (JI)I am not judging anyone. 16 But even (JJ)if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 Even in (JK)your Law it has been written that the testimony of (JL)two people is [ba]true. 18 I am He who testifies about Myself, and (JM)the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; (JN)if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke [bb]in (JO)the treasury, as (JP)He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because (JQ)His hour had not yet come.

21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and (JR)you will look for Me, and (JS)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (JT)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, (JU)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, (JV)You are from below, I am from above; (JW)you are of this world, (JX)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (JY)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [bc](JZ)I am, (KA)you will die in your sins.” 25 Then they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, [bd]What have I even been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but (KB)He who sent Me is true; and (KC)the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (KD)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [be](KE)I am, and (KF)I do nothing [bf]on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (KG)He [bg]has not left Me alone, for (KH)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He said these things, (KI)many came to believe in Him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, (KJ)If you continue in My word, then you are truly My (KK)disciples; 32 and (KL)you will know the truth, and (KM)the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered Him, “(KN)We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly I say to you, (KO)everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 Now (KP)the slave does not remain in the house forever; (KQ)the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son (KR)sets you free, you really will be free. 37 I know that you are (KS)Abraham’s descendants; yet (KT)you are seeking to kill Me, because My word [bh]has no place in you. 38 I speak of the things which I have seen [bi]with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (KU)your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is (KV)our father.” Jesus *said to them, (KW)If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, (KX)you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has (KY)told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of (KZ)your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born as a result of sexual immorality; (LA)we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, (LB)you would love Me, (LC)for I came forth from God and am here; for I have (LD)not even come [bj]on My own, but [bk](LE)He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand [bl](LF)what I am saying? It is because you cannot (LG)listen to My word. 44 (LH)You are of (LI)your father the devil, and (LJ)you want to do the desires of your father. (LK)He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because (LL)there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells [bm]a lie, he (LM)speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of [bn]lies. 45 But because (LN)I say the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If (LO)I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (LP)The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 (LQ)The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not rightly say that You are a (LR)Samaritan, and You (LS)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not (LT)have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But (LU)I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges. 51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone (LV)follows My word, he will never (LW)see death.” 52 (LX)The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (LY)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, ‘If anyone (LZ)follows My word, he will never (MA)taste of death.’ 53 You (MB)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (MC)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (MD)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and (ME)you have not come to know Him, (MF)but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (MG)a liar like you; (MH)but I do know Him, and I (MI)follow His word. 56 (MJ)Your father Abraham was (MK)overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.” 57 (ML)So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham [bo]was born, [bp](MM)I am.” 59 Therefore they (MN)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus (MO)hid Himself and left the temple grounds.

A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda

After (A)this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus (B)went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem (C)by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, [a]Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, [b]paralyzed, [c]waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”

The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

Jesus said to him, (D)“Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

And (E)that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; (F)it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”

11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’

12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was (G)healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. (H)Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”

15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Honor the Father and the Son

16 For this reason the Jews (I)persecuted Jesus, [d]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, (J)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

18 Therefore the Jews (K)sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, (L)making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (M)the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For (N)the Father loves the Son, and (O)shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, (P)even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but (Q)has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (R)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Life and Judgment Are Through the Son

24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, (S)he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, (T)but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when (U)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For (V)as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have (W)life in Himself, 27 and (X)has given Him authority to execute judgment also, (Y)because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will (Z)hear His voice 29 (AA)and come forth—(AB)those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 (AC)I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because (AD)I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

The Fourfold Witness

31 (AE)“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not [e]true. 32 (AF)There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33 You have sent to John, (AG)and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35 He was the burning and (AH)shining lamp, and (AI)you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36 But (AJ)I have a greater witness than John’s; for (AK)the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very (AL)works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, (AM)has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, (AN)nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 (AO)You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and (AP)these are they which testify of Me. 40 (AQ)But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

41 (AR)“I do not receive honor from men. 42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44 (AS)How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek (AT)the honor that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; (AU)there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; (AV)for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you (AW)do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Feeding the Five Thousand(AX)

After (AY)these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of (AZ)Tiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were (BA)diseased.[f] And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

(BB)Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. (BC)Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to (BD)Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

Philip answered Him, (BE)“Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”

One of His disciples, (BF)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, (BG)but what are they among so many?”

10 Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them [g]to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” 13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly (BH)the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Sea(BI)

15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him (BJ)king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

16 (BK)Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about [h]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were (BL)afraid. 20 But He said to them, (BM)“It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

The Bread from Heaven

22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except [i]that one [j]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— 23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— 24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, (BN)seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 (BO)Do not labor for the food which perishes, but (BP)for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, (BQ)because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, (BR)“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

30 Therefore they said to Him, (BS)“What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 (BT)Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, (BU)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’

32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but (BV)My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 (BW)Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

35 And Jesus said to them, (BX)“I am the bread of life. (BY)He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never (BZ)thirst. 36 (CA)But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet (CB)do not believe. 37 (CC)All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and (CD)the one who comes to Me I will [k]by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, (CE)not to do My own will, (CF)but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, (CG)that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, (CH)that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Rejected by His Own

41 The Jews then [l]complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 And they said, (CI)“Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, [m]“Do not murmur among yourselves. 44 (CJ)No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (CK)draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, (CL)‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ (CM)Therefore everyone who [n]has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 (CN)Not that anyone has seen the Father, (CO)except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Most assuredly, I say to you, (CP)he who believes [o]in Me has everlasting life. 48 (CQ)I am the bread of life. 49 (CR)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 (CS)This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread (CT)which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and (CU)the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”

52 The Jews therefore (CV)quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”

53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless (CW)you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 (CX)Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is [p]food indeed, and My blood is [q]drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (CY)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 (CZ)This is the bread which came down from heaven—not (DA)as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Turn Away

60 (DB)Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a [r]hard saying; who can understand it?”

61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples [s]complained about this, He said to them, “Does this [t]offend you? 62 (DC)What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 (DD)It is the Spirit who gives life; the (DE)flesh profits nothing. The (DF)words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But (DG)there are some of you who do not believe.” For (DH)Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore (DI)I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”

66 (DJ)From that time many of His disciples went [u]back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”

68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (DK)the words of eternal life. 69 (DL)Also we have come to believe and know that You are the [v]Christ, the Son of the living God.”

70 Jesus answered them, (DM)“Did I not choose you, the twelve, (DN)and one of you is a devil?” 71 He spoke of (DO)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would (DP)betray Him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus’ Brothers Disbelieve

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, (DQ)because the [w]Jews sought to kill Him. (DR)Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. (DS)His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” For (DT)even His (DU)brothers did not believe in Him.

Then Jesus said to them, (DV)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. (DW)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me (DX)because I testify of it that its works are evil. You go up to this feast. I am not [x]yet going up to this feast, (DY)for My time has not yet fully come.” When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

The Heavenly Scholar

10 But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11 Then (DZ)the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” 12 And (EA)there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. (EB)Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” 13 However, no one spoke openly of Him (EC)for fear of the Jews.

14 Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and (ED)taught. 15 (EE)And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

16 [y]Jesus answered them and said, (EF)“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 (EG)If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. 18 (EH)He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who (EI)seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and (EJ)no unrighteousness is in Him. 19 (EK)Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? (EL)Why do you seek to kill Me?”

20 The people answered and said, (EM)“You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 (EN)Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, (EO)but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because (EP)I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24 (EQ)Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Could This Be the Christ?

25 Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to (ER)kill? 26 But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. (ES)Do the rulers know indeed that this is [z]truly the Christ? 27 (ET)However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”

28 Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, (EU)“You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and (EV)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me (EW)is true, (EX)whom you do not know. 29 [aa]But (EY)I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30 Therefore (EZ)they sought to take Him; but (FA)no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 And (FB)many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”

Jesus and the Religious Leaders

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said [ab]to them, (FC)“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I (FD)go to Him who sent Me. 34 You (FE)will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you (FF)cannot come.”

35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to (FG)the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

37 (FH)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (FI)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (FJ)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (FK)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (FL)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [ac]believing in Him would receive; for the [ad]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (FM)glorified.

Who Is He?

40 Therefore [ae]many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is (FN)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (FO)the Christ.”

But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (FP)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (FQ)where David was?” 43 So (FR)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (FS)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Rejected by the Authorities

45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

46 The officers answered, (FT)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”

47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

50 Nicodemus (FU)(he who came to [af]Jesus [ag]by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 (FV)“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for (FW)no prophet [ah]has arisen out of Galilee.”

An Adulteress Faces the Light of the World

53 [ai]And everyone went to his own house.

Jesus the Light of the World

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

Now [aj]early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and (FX)taught them. Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, “Teacher, [ak]this woman was caught in (FY)adultery, in the very act. (FZ)Now [al]Moses, in the law, commanded us [am]that such should be stoned. But what do You [an]say?” This they said, testing Him, that they (GA)might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, [ao]as though He did not hear.

So when they continued asking Him, He [ap]raised Himself up and said to them, (GB)“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, (GC)being[aq] convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up [ar]and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers [as]of yours? Has no one condemned you?”

11 She said, “No one, Lord.”

And Jesus said to her, (GD)“Neither do I condemn you; go [at]and (GE)sin no more.”

12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, (GF)“I am the light of the world. He who (GG)follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Jesus Defends His Self-Witness

13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, (GH)“You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not [au]true.”

14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but (GI)you do not know where I come from and where I am going. 15 (GJ)You judge according to the flesh; (GK)I judge no one. 16 And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for (GL)I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. 17 (GM)It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am One who bears witness of Myself, and (GN)the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”

19 Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?”

Jesus answered, (GO)“You know neither Me nor My Father. (GP)If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”

20 These words Jesus spoke in (GQ)the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and (GR)no one laid hands on Him, for (GS)His hour had not yet come.

Jesus Predicts His Departure

21 Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and (GT)you will seek Me, and (GU)will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”

22 So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”

23 And He said to them, (GV)“You are from beneath; I am from above. (GW)You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 (GX)Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; (GY)for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

25 Then they said to Him, “Who are You?”

And Jesus said to them, “Just what I (GZ)have been saying to you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but (HA)He who sent Me is true; and (HB)I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.”

27 They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.

28 Then Jesus said to them, “When you (HC)lift[av] up the Son of Man, (HD)then you will know that I am He, and (HE)that I do nothing of Myself; but (HF)as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. 29 And (HG)He who sent Me is with Me. (HH)The Father has not left Me alone, (HI)for I always do those things that please Him.” 30 As He spoke these words, (HJ)many believed in Him.

The Truth Shall Make You Free

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you (HK)abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the (HL)truth, and (HM)the truth shall make you free.”

33 They answered Him, (HN)“We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (HO)whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And (HP)a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 (HQ)Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Abraham’s Seed and Satan’s

37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but (HR)you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 (HS)I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have [aw]seen with your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, (HT)“Abraham is our father.”

Jesus said to them, (HU)“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 (HV)But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth (HW)which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.”

Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; (HX)we have one Father—God.”

42 Jesus said to them, (HY)“If God were your Father, you would love Me, for (HZ)I proceeded forth and came from God; (IA)nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 (IB)Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 (IC)You are of your father the devil, and the (ID)desires of your father you want to (IE)do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and (IF)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (IG)He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I AM

48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and (IH)have a demon?”

49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and (II)you dishonor Me. 50 And (IJ)I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Most assuredly, I say to you, (IK)if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”

52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (IL)have a demon! (IM)Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. (IN)Who do You make Yourself out to be?”

54 Jesus answered, (IO)“If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. (IP)It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is [ax]your God. 55 Yet (IQ)you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and (IR)keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham (IS)rejoiced to see My day, (IT)and he saw it and was glad.”

57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”

58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (IU)before Abraham was, (IV)I AM.”

59 Then (IW)they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, (IX)going[ay] through the midst of them, and so passed by.

Help Not in Egypt but in God

31 Woe to those who go down to (A)Egypt for help
And (B)rely on horses,
And trust in chariots because they are many
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But they do not (C)look to the (D)Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!
Yet He also is (E)wise and will (F)bring disaster,
And does (G)not retract His words,
But will arise against the house of (H)evildoers,
And against the help of the (I)workers of injustice.
Now the Egyptians are (J)human and not God,
And their (K)horses are flesh and not spirit;
So the Lord will (L)stretch out His hand,
And any (M)helper will stumble,
And one who is helped will fall.
And all of them will come to an end together.

For this is what the Lord says to me:
“As the (N)lion or the young lion growls over his prey,
Against which a band of shepherds is called out,
And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise,
So will the Lord of armies come down to wage (O)war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”
Like [a]flying (P)birds so the Lord of armies will protect Jerusalem.
He will (Q)protect and save it;
He will pass over and rescue it.

(R)Return to Him against whom [b]you have been (S)profoundly obstinate, you sons of Israel. For on that day every person will (T)reject his silver idols and his gold idols, which your hands have made for you as (U)a sin.

And the (V)Assyrian will fall by a sword not wielded by a man,
And a (W)sword not of man will devour him.
So he will [c](X)not escape the sword,
And his young men will become (Y)forced laborers.
“His (Z)rock will pass away because of panic,
And his officers will be terrified by the (AA)flag,”
Declares the Lord, whose (AB)fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

The Glorious Future

32 Behold, a (AC)king will reign righteously,
And officials will rule justly.
Each will be like a (AD)refuge from the wind
And a shelter from the storm,
Like [d](AE)streams of water in a dry country,
Like the (AF)shade of a [e]huge rock in an exhausted land.
Then (AG)the eyes of those who see will not be [f]blinded,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
The [g]mind of the (AH)rash will discern the [h]truth,
And the tongue of the stammerers will hurry to speak clearly.
No longer will the (AI)fool be called noble,
Or the rogue be spoken of as generous.
For a fool speaks nonsense,
And his heart [i](AJ)inclines toward wickedness:
To practice (AK)ungodliness and to speak error against the Lord,
To [j](AL)keep the hungry person unsatisfied
And [k]to withhold drink from the thirsty.
As for a rogue, his weapons are evil;
He (AM)devises wicked schemes
To (AN)destroy the poor with [l]slander,
(AO)Even though the needy one speaks [m]what is right.
But (AP)the noble person devises noble plans;
And by noble plans he stands.

Rise up, you (AQ)women who are at ease,
And hear my voice;
(AR)Listen to my word,
You complacent daughters.
10 Within a year and a few days
You will be troubled, you complacent daughters;
(AS)For the vintage is ended,
And the fruit gathering will not come.
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease;
(AT)Be troubled, you complacent daughters;
(AU)Strip, undress, and put sackcloth on your waist,
12 (AV)Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,
13 (AW)For the land of my people in which thorns and briars will come up;
Indeed, for all the joyful houses and for the (AX)jubilant city.
14 For (AY)the palace has been neglected, the [n]populated (AZ)city abandoned.
[o]Hill and watch-tower have become (BA)caves forever,
A delight for (BB)wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks,
15 Until the (BC)Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,
And the wilderness becomes a (BD)fertile field,
And the fertile field is considered as a forest.
16 Then (BE)justice will dwell in the wilderness,
And righteousness will remain in the fertile field.
17 And the (BF)work of righteousness will be peace,
And the service of righteousness, (BG)quietness and [p]confidence forever.
18 Then my people will live in a (BH)peaceful settlement,
In secure dwellings, and in undisturbed (BI)resting places;
19 And it will (BJ)hail when the (BK)forest comes down,
And (BL)the city will be utterly laid low.
20 How (BM)blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters,
Who [q]let the ox and the donkey out freely.

The Folly of Not Trusting God

31 Woe to those (A)who go down to Egypt for help,
And (B)rely on horses,
Who trust in chariots because they are many,
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel,
(C)Nor seek the Lord!
Yet He also is wise and will bring disaster,
And (D)will not [a]call back His words,
But will arise against the house of evildoers,
And against the help of those who work iniquity.
Now the Egyptians are men, and not God;
And their horses are flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out His hand,
Both he who helps will fall,
And he who is helped will fall down;
They all will perish (E)together.

God Will Deliver Jerusalem

For thus the Lord has spoken to me:

(F)“As a lion roars,
And a young lion over his prey
(When a multitude of shepherds is summoned against him,
He will not be afraid of their voice
Nor be disturbed by their noise),
So the Lord of hosts will come down
To fight for Mount Zion and for its hill.
(G)Like birds flying about,
So will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem.
Defending, He will also deliver it;
Passing over, He will preserve it.

Return to Him against whom the children of Israel have (H)deeply revolted. For in that day every man shall (I)throw away his idols of silver and his idols of gold—(J)sin, which your own hands have made for yourselves.

“Then Assyria shall (K)fall by a sword not of man,
And a sword not of mankind shall (L)devour him.
But he shall flee from the sword,
And his young men shall become forced labor.
(M)He shall cross over to his stronghold for fear,
And his princes shall be afraid of the banner,”
Says the Lord,
Whose fire is in Zion
And whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

A Reign of Righteousness

32 Behold, (N)a king will reign in righteousness,
And princes will rule with justice.
A man will be as a hiding place from the wind,
And (O)a [b]cover from the tempest,
As rivers of water in a dry place,
As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
(P)The eyes of those who see will not be dim,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
Also the heart of the [c]rash will (Q)understand knowledge,
And the tongue of the stammerers will be ready to speak plainly.

The foolish person will no longer be called [d]generous,
Nor the miser said to be bountiful;
For the foolish person will speak foolishness,
And his heart will work (R)iniquity:
To practice ungodliness,
To utter error against the Lord,
To keep the hungry unsatisfied,
And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
Also the schemes of the schemer are evil;
He devises wicked plans
To destroy the poor with (S)lying words,
Even when the needy speaks justice.
But a [e]generous man devises generous things,
And by generosity he shall stand.

Consequences of Complacency

Rise up, you women (T)who are at ease,
Hear my voice;
You complacent daughters,
Give ear to my speech.
10 In a year and some days
You will be troubled, you complacent women;
For the vintage will fail,
The gathering will not come.
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease;
Be troubled, you complacent ones;
Strip yourselves, make yourselves bare,
And gird sackcloth on your waists.

12 People shall mourn upon their breasts
For the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.
13 (U)On the land of my people will come up thorns and briers,
Yes, on all the happy homes in (V)the joyous city;
14 (W)Because the palaces will be forsaken,
The bustling city will be deserted.
The forts and towers will become lairs forever,
A joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks—
15 Until (X)the Spirit is poured upon us from on high,
And (Y)the wilderness becomes a fruitful field,
And the fruitful field is counted as a forest.

The Peace of God’s Reign

16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,
And righteousness remain in the fruitful field.
17 (Z)The work of righteousness will be peace,
And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.
18 My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation,
In secure dwellings, and in quiet (AA)resting places,
19 (AB)Though hail comes down (AC)on the forest,
And the city is brought low in humiliation.

20 Blessed are you who sow beside all waters,
Who send out freely the feet of (AD)the ox and the donkey.
