45 Philip found Nathanael(A) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(B) and about whom the prophets also wrote(C)—Jesus of Nazareth,(D) the son of Joseph.”(E)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(F) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(G) in whom there is no deceit.”(H)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(I) you are the Son of God;(J) you are the king of Israel.”(K)

50 Jesus said, “You believe[a] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[b] you[c] will see ‘heaven open,(L) and the angels of God ascending and descending(M) on’[d] the Son of Man.”(N)

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.(O) Jesus’ mother(P) was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman,[e](Q) why do you involve me?”(R) Jesus replied. “My hour(S) has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”(T)

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,(U) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[f]

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.(V) He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs(W) through which he revealed his glory;(X) and his disciples believed in him.(Y)
