^4 (A)Remain in Me, ^[a]and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit ^[b]of itself ^[c]but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.

⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him ^[a](A)bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

⁵ Not that we are adequate in ourselves so as to consider anything as having come from ourselves, but ^(A)our adequacy is from God,

¹³ for it is ^(A)God who is at work in you, both to ^[a]desire and to work ^(B)for His good pleasure.

¹² So then, my beloved, ^(A)just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own ^(B)salvation with ^(C)fear and trembling;

¹¹ And we desire that each one of you demonstrate the same diligence ^[a]so as to realize the ^(A)full assurance of ^(B)hope until the end,

¹² so that you will not be sluggish, but ^(A)imitators of those who through ^(B)faith and endurance ^(C)inherit the promises.
