The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am^(A) the true vine,^(B) and my Father is the gardener.

² He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,^(A) while every branch that does bear fruit^(B) he prunes^[a] so that it will be even more fruitful.

⁴ Remain in me, as I also remain in you.^(A) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

⁸ This is to my Father’s glory,^(A) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.^(B)

¹⁶ You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you^(A) so that you might go and bear fruit^(B)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.^(C)

¹⁹ that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.^(A) And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. ²⁰ We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,^(B) as though God were making his appeal through us.^(C) We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.^(D)

¹³ Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.^(A) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water^(B) welling up to eternal life.”^(C)

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two^(A)(B)(C)

10 After this the Lord^(D) appointed seventy-two^[a] others^(E) and sent them two by two^(F) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.^{(G) 2} He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.^{(H) 3} Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.^(I)
