Rest of the Land Divided

18 Then the whole congregation of the sons of Israel assembled at ^(A)Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there; and the land was subdued before them.

² But there remained among the sons of Israel seven tribes who had not divided their inheritance. ³ So Joshua said to the sons of Israel, “^(B)How long will you ^[a]put off entering to take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you? ⁴ Provide for yourselves three men from ^[b]each tribe so that I may send them, and that they may arise and walk through the land and write a description of it according to their inheritance; then they shall ^[c]return to me. ⁵ And they shall divide it into seven portions; ^(C)Judah shall stay in its territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall stay in their territory on the north. ⁶ And you shall write a description of the land in seven divisions, and bring the description here to me. ^(D)Then I will cast lots for you here before the Lord our God. ⁷ For ^(E)the Levites have no portion among you, because the priesthood of the Lord is ^[d]their inheritance. Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh also have received their inheritance eastward beyond the Jordan, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them.”

⁸ Then the men arose and went, and Joshua commanded those who went to write a description of the land, saying, “Go and walk through the land and write a description of it, and return to me; then I will cast lots for you here before the Lord in ^(F)Shiloh.” ⁹ So the men went and passed through the land, and wrote a description of it by cities in seven divisions in a book; and they came to Joshua at the camp at Shiloh. ^10 (G)Joshua then cast lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord, and there Joshua divided the land for the sons of Israel according to their divisions.

The Territory of Benjamin

¹¹ Now the lot of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin came up according to their families, and the territory of their lot ^[e]lay between the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph. ^12 (H)Their border on the north side was from the Jordan, then the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward, and ^[f]it ended at the wilderness of Beth-aven. ¹³ Then from there the border continued to ^(I)Luz, to the side of Luz (that is, Bethel) southward; and the border went down to Ataroth-addar, near the hill which lies on the south of ^(J)lower Beth-horon. ¹⁴ And the border changed direction from there and turned around on the west side southward, from the hill which lies opposite Beth-horon southward; and ^[g]it ended at Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the west side. ¹⁵ Then the ^(K)south side was from the edge of Kiriath-jearim, and the border went westward and went to the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah. ¹⁶ Then the border went down to the edge of the hill which is ^[h]in the ^(L)Valley of Ben-hinnom, which is in the Valley of Rephaim northward; and it went down to the Valley of Hinnom, to the slope of the Jebusite southward, and went down to En-rogel. ¹⁷ Then it turned northward and went to En-shemesh, and went to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, and it went down to the ^(M)stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. ¹⁸ And it continued to the side in front of the Arabah northward, and went down to the Arabah. ¹⁹ Then the border continued to the side of Beth-hoglah northward; and the ^[i]border ended at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the southern border. ²⁰ Moreover, the Jordan was its border on the east side. This was the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin according to their families, and according to its borders all around.

²¹ Now the cities of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, Beth-hoglah, and Emek-keziz, ²² Beth-arabah, Zemaraim, and Bethel, ²³ Avvim, Parah, and Ophrah, ²⁴ Chephar-ammoni, Ophni, and ^(N)Geba; twelve cities with their villages. ²⁵ Gibeon, Ramah, and Beeroth, ²⁶ Mizpeh, Chephirah, and Mozah, ²⁷ Rekem, Irpeel, and Taralah, ^28 (O)Zelah, Haeleph, the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah, Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the ^(P)sons of Benjamin according to their families.

Territory of Simeon

19 Then the second lot went to Simeon, to the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families; and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Judah. ² So they had in their inheritance Beersheba or ^[j]Sheba and Moladah, ³ Hazar-shual, Balah, and Ezem, ⁴ Eltolad, Bethul, and Hormah, ⁵ Ziklag, Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susah, ⁶ Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages; ⁷ Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan; four cities with their villages; ⁸ and all the villages which were around these cities as far as Baalath-beer, Ramah of the ^[k]Negev. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families. ⁹ The inheritance of the sons of Simeon was taken from the portion of the sons of Judah, because the share of the sons of Judah was too large for them; so the sons of Simeon received an inheritance in the midst of ^[l]Judah’s inheritance.

Territory of Zebulun

¹⁰ Now the third lot came up for the sons of Zebulun according to their families. And the territory of their inheritance was as far as Sarid. ¹¹ Then their border went up to the west and to Maralah, and it reached Dabbesheth and reached to the ^[m]brook that is opposite Jokneam. ¹² Then it turned from Sarid to the east toward the sunrise as far as the border of Chisloth-tabor, and it proceeded to Daberath and ^[n]up to Japhia. ¹³ From there it continued eastward toward the sunrise to Gath-hepher, to Eth-kazin, and it proceeded to Rimmon ^[o]which stretches to Neah. ¹⁴ Then the border circled around it on the north to Hannathon, and ^[p]it ended at the Valley of Iphtahel. ¹⁵ Included also were Kattah, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem; twelve cities with their villages. ¹⁶ This was the inheritance of the sons of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Territory of Issachar

¹⁷ The fourth lot went to Issachar, to the sons of Issachar according to their families. ¹⁸ Their territory was to Jezreel and included Chesulloth, ^(Q)Shunem, ¹⁹ Hapharaim, Shion, and Anaharath, ²⁰ Rabbith, Kishion, and Ebez, ²¹ Remeth, En-gannim, En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez. ²² The border reached to ^(R)Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh, and ^[q]their border ended at the Jordan; sixteen cities with their villages. ²³ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Issachar according to their families, the cities with their villages.

Territory of Asher

²⁴ Now the fifth lot went to the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families. ²⁵ Their territory was Helkath, Hali, Beten, and Achshaph, ²⁶ Allammelech, Amad, and Mishal; and it reached to Carmel on the west and Shihor-libnath. ²⁷ It turned toward the ^[r]east to Beth-dagon and reached Zebulun, and to the Valley of Iphtahel northward to Beth-emek and Neiel; then it proceeded on ^[s]north to ^(S)Cabul, ²⁸ Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as Great ^(T)Sidon. ²⁹ The border turned to Ramah and to the fortified city of Tyre; then the border turned to Hosah, and ^[t]it ended at the sea by the region of ^(U)Achzib. ³⁰ Included also were Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob; twenty-two cities with their villages. ³¹ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Territory of Naphtali

³² The sixth lot went to the sons of Naphtali; to the sons of Naphtali according to their families. ³³ Their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim, and Adami-nekeb and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum, and ^[u]it ended at the Jordan. ³⁴ Then the border turned westward to Aznoth-tabor and proceeded from there to Hukkok; and it reached Zebulun on the south and reached Asher on the west, and Judah at the Jordan toward the ^[v]east. ³⁵ The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, ^(V)Hammath, Rakkath, and ^(W)Chinnereth, ³⁶ Adamah, Ramah, and Hazor, ³⁷ Kedesh, Edrei, and En-hazor, ³⁸ Yiron, Migdal-el, Horem, Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages. ³⁹ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali according to their families, the cities with their villages.

Territory of Dan

⁴⁰ The seventh lot went to the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families. ⁴¹ The territory of their inheritance was Zorah, Eshtaol, and Ir-shemesh, ⁴² Shaalabbin, Aijalon, and Ithlah, ⁴³ Elon, Timnah, and Ekron, ⁴⁴ Eltekeh, Gibbethon, and Baalath, ⁴⁵ Jehud, Bene-berak, and Gath-rimmon, ⁴⁶ Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, with the territory opposite ^[w]Joppa. ⁴⁷ The territory of the ^(X)sons of Dan proceeded ^[x]beyond them; for the sons of Dan went up and fought with Leshem and captured it. Then they struck it with the edge of the sword and took possession of it and ^[y]settled in it; and they named ^[z](Y)Leshem Dan after the name of their father Dan. ⁴⁸ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

⁴⁹ When they finished apportioning the land for inheritance by its borders, the sons of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua the son of Nun. ⁵⁰ In accordance with the ^[aa]command of the Lord, they gave him the city for which he asked, ^(Z)Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim. So he built the city and ^[ab]settled in it.

^51 (AA)These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the sons of Israel apportioned by lot in Shiloh before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. So they finished dividing the land.

Grief over Zion

⁷ Therefore this is what the Lord of armies says:

¹² Who is the ^(AD)wise person who may understand this? And who is he to whom ^(AE)the mouth of the Lord has spoken, that he may declare it? ^(AF)Why is the land destroyed, laid waste like the desert, so that no one passes through? ¹³ The Lord said, “Because they have ^(AG)abandoned My Law which I put before them, and have not obeyed My voice nor walked according to it, ¹⁴ but have ^(AH)followed the stubbornness of their heart and the ^(AI)Baals, ^[d]as their ^(AJ)fathers taught them,” ¹⁵ therefore this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Behold, ^(AK)I will feed this people wormwood; and I will give them ^(AL)poisoned water to drink. ¹⁶ I will also ^(AM)scatter them among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the ^(AN)sword after them until I have put an end to them.”

¹⁷ This is what the Lord of armies says:

²³ This is what the Lord says: “^(AY)Let no wise man boast of his wisdom, nor let the ^(AZ)mighty man boast of his might, nor a ^(BA)rich man boast of his riches; ²⁴ but let the one who boasts ^(BB)boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who ^(BC)exercises ^[f]mercy, justice, and righteousness on the earth; for I ^(BD)delight in these things,” declares the Lord.

²⁵ “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet ^(BE)uncircumcised— ²⁶ Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and ^(BF)all those inhabiting the desert who trim the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are ^(BG)uncircumcised of heart.”

Hypocrisy Exposed

23 ^(A)Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, ² saying: “^(B)The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses. ³ Therefore, whatever they tell you, do and ^[a]comply with it all, but do not do ^[b]as they do; for they say things and do not do them. ⁴ And ^(C)they tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as their finger. ⁵ And they do all their deeds ^(D)to be noticed by other people; for they ^(E)broaden their ^[c]phylacteries and lengthen ^(F)the tassels of their garments. ⁶ And they ^(G)love the place of honor at banquets, and the seats of honor in the synagogues, ⁷ and personal greetings in the marketplaces, and being called ^[d](H)Rabbi by the people. ⁸ But as for you, ^(I)do not be called ^[e](J)Rabbi; for only One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters. ⁹ And do not call anyone on earth your father; for only ^(K)One is your Father, He who is in heaven. ¹⁰ And do not be called ^[f]leaders; for only One is your Leader, that is, Christ. ^11 (L)But the greatest of you shall be your servant. ^12 (M)Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Eight Woes

¹³ “^(N)But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, ^(O)because you shut the kingdom of heaven in front of people; for you do not enter it yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.^[g]

¹⁵ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one ^[h](P)proselyte; and when he becomes one, you ^[i]make him twice as much a son of ^[j](Q)hell as yourselves.

¹⁶ “Woe to you, ^(R)blind guides, who say, ‘^(S)Whoever swears by the ^[k]temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the ^[l]temple is obligated.’ ¹⁷ You fools and blind men! ^(T)Which is ^[m]more important, the gold or the ^[n]temple that sanctified the gold? ¹⁸ And you say, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the ^[o]offering that is on it is obligated.’ ¹⁹ You blind men, ^(U)which is ^[p]more important, the ^[q]offering or the altar that sanctifies the ^[r]offering? ²⁰ Therefore, the one who swears by the altar, swears both by ^[s]the altar and by everything on it. ²¹ And the one who swears by the ^[t]temple, swears both by ^[u]the temple and by Him who ^(V)dwells in it. ²² And the one who swears by ^[v]heaven, ^(W)swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

²³ “^(X)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and ^[w]cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. ²⁴ You ^(Y)blind guides, who ^[x]strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

²⁵ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ^(Z)you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full ^[y]of robbery and self-indulgence. ²⁶ You blind Pharisee, first ^(AA)clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the ^[z]outside of it may also become clean.

²⁷ “^(AB)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. ²⁸ So you too, outwardly appear righteous to people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

²⁹ “^(AC)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰ and you say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ ³¹ So you testify against yourselves, that you ^(AD)are ^[aa]sons of those who murdered the prophets. ^32 [ab]Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers. ³³ You snakes, ^(AE)you ^[ac]offspring of vipers, how ^[ad]will you escape the ^[ae]sentence of ^[af](AF)hell?

³⁴ “^(AG)Therefore, behold, ^(AH)I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will ^(AI)flog in your synagogues, and ^(AJ)persecute from city to city, ³⁵ so that upon you will fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous ^(AK)Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the ^(AL)son of Berechiah, whom ^(AM)you murdered between the ^[ag]temple and the altar. ³⁶ Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon ^(AN)this generation.

³⁷ “^(AO)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who ^(AP)kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, ^(AQ)the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. ³⁸ Behold, ^(AR)your house is being left to you desolate! ³⁹ For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘^(AS)Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
